Guidance on booking and preparing for the IAPS

Last Updated: 26th March 2021

The Independent Assessment of Professional Skills (IAPS) is the final examination for Physical, Physiological and Bioinformatics HSST trainees, to assess readiness to practice at Consultant Clinical Scientist level.

How to book your IAPS event

When to book your IAPS

The IAPS events will run twice a year in May and December. Applications for events will need to be submitted 3 months prior to the event. Details of exact dates and deadlines will be sent out in the HSST Monthly Memo. As part of their application for IAPS, trainees must submit a showcase containing separate evidence that demonstrates their practice at consultant clinical scientist (CCS) level on each of the 5 GSP domains and which form the umbrella domains of the Higher Specialist Scientist Standards of Proficiency (HSS SoPs). Therefore, to apply an IAPS event you must have submitted and had signed off evidence for all HSS SoPs by the time of IAPS application. Please plan your intended IAPS sitting accordingly.

How to book your IAPS

There will be two IAPS events delivered each year: May and December. The number of days will be dependent on the expected number of trainees applying. The IAPS application is available as one of the forms on OneFile. Once you have selected the period, the exact date of your particular IAPS event will be emailed to you together with attendance details.

When selecting the period during which you wish to sit your IAPS, please ensure you have considered other events for which you may need to attend e.g. your research project viva. Once you have booked your IAPS event, any changes will need to be submitted via the IAPS exceptional arrangements policy. The School acknowledges that unforeseen events may occur near the time of the IAPS requiring a deferment. These are considered under the IAPS mitigating circumstances policy.
