Equality and diversity

Last Updated: 1st October 2020

It is vital that you treat all patients and colleagues fairly and with respect.

Equality means ensuring everyone in your department has equal opportunities regardless of your ability, background or lifestyle.

Diversity means appreciating the differences between people and treating people’s values, beliefs, cultures and lifestyles with respect.

Under the Equality Act 2010, all NHS Trusts must:

  • eliminate unlawful; discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
  • advance equality of opportunity between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

This also means treating all patients that you come into contact with fairly and equally, with respect for their personal values, beliefs, cultures and lifestyles.

There is a STP Trainee BAME network that you as HSST trainees are also welcome to join by using the email address The School also have a committee made up of school staff members and a member of the STP Bame Network which has been set up with the intention to promote and share good practice of equality and diversity in all areas of our work.

The School is in the process of deciding on the training resources that will be made available to all STP trainees and training officers as part of their equality and diversity training. In the interim we have provided some online resources that can be accessed until these decisions have made.
