What is the HSST training budget being used for and is this monitored by Health Education England (HEE)?

A training allowance of £13k per year is provided to Trusts in support of their Higher Specialist Clinical Scientists in training.

As the HSST is a bespoke programme and individuals learning needs vary the way in which this resource is utilised to support individuals undertaking the programme may also vary.

HEE West Midlands is working with local education offices across the country to understand how the resource is being used.

Jenny Hannington, Head of Quality and Commissioning M&E, has written to all HSST Trainees and Supervisors to clarify the use of the £13,000 per annum training allowance paid to placement providers for each HSST Trainee which you can download here.

Please note that trusts with trainees funded via the National Genomics Education Programme have a different model of funding which does not include this allowance.
