Guidance for employers on applying to the ASP programme

Any employer providing Healthcare Science services can sponsor an employee to undertake an ASP programme.


When to submit your application form

An application form and learning agreement must be emailed to by 31st May to begin the programme in September of the same calendar year.

As the employer you must agree to the terms of the Learning and Data Sharing Agreement to demonstrate you understand your responsibilities for the ASP programme. The trainee you are sponsoring must also complete the Learning and Data Sharing Agreement as part of the enrolment process at the beginning of the academic year.


Your responsibilities as an employer

You are responsible for:

  • funding the programme
  • appointing a suitably qualified training officer
  • working with your trainee to create a training plan
  • monitoring progress against the training plan
  • arranging any external placements that are required
  • ensuring that your trainee has adequate protected time to complete the programme in a timely manner
  • provision of essential resources and support to enable the trainee to successfully complete the programme

Appointing a training officer

You must appoint a suitably qualified training officer for each trainee on the programme.  Each training officer must be practising at the appropriate level and specialty for the programme and must complete the training qualifications form summarising their education and training qualifications. Guidance is available below and what skills and experience are required to become a training officer.

Nominated training officers may attend training we provide at an additional cost per training session.


Approving trainee qualifications

You are also responsible for approving the trainee’s enrolment on the programme based on their existing qualifications and experience. We will not enforce or undertake any independent checks of qualifications, experience or pre-requisites suggested in the ASP programme aim.

You may also wish to have a separate training agreement in place with your trainee.  Speak with your trust or institutions local training and development department to find out about any pre-existing arrangements.


Notify us of possible delays to completion

Please notify us immediately by emailing if there may be a delay in the trainee completing the programme. We will need to know what the anticipated period of delay will be and if this will have an impact on the trainee’s final assessment. As the employer you are responsible for the support and management of the trainee throughout this time.

Trainees exceeding the time period determined in the ASP programme specification will be subject to an additional charge for continued access to the programme and e-portfolio of £200 per year.
