The trainee will be principally based in the Molecular Diagnostics department at the Royal Surrey Hospital. In the first year, there will be rotation into the local Haematology, Histology and Bioinformatics departments. The trainee will have the opportunity to attend Oncology, Haematology and Surgical clinics and will be encouraged to participate in outreach work such as Reach out for Healthcare science, science4U and being a STEM ambassador.

Clinical Biochemistry – Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The trainee will be principally based in the Clinical Biochemistry department at the Royal Surrey Hospital but will spend time at each of the Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services Clinical Biochemistry sites. In the first year, there will be rotations to our Molecular Diagnostics department based at the Royal Surrey Hospital and our Immunology department based at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey. In subsequent years, there will be rotation through our Specialist Clinical Biochemistry services based at the Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford and a paediatric placement to the Inherited Metabolic Disease Laboratory at Synnovis, London.

Clinical Scientific Computing – Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

This STP post is based in the exciting Scientific Computing group (SciCom), one of the first dedicated clinical scientific computing groups in the NHS. SciCom works in full project life-cycles developing computing systems, from user requirements specification through implementation to testing and deployment. Application areas include clinical databases, research imaging archives for training deep-learning models, web-portals supporting day-to-day operations of the Trust and medical imaging routers, data extractors and de-identification tools. Work-place competencies will typically be completed through working on real-life tasks and software projects. Rotational and specialist modules will be completed primarily within SciCom, as well as within Medical Physics and Health Informatics teams at the Royal Surrey. The Introduction to Clinical Engineering rotation module will be completed during a 4-week placement at Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Nuclear Medicine – Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The Nuclear Medicine Physics team consists of 16 physicists, providing scientific support to 5 clinical nuclear medicine departments and 2 PET/CT services in the South East. Facilities at RSCH include SPECT/CT systems (one with solid state detector technology) and radionuclide laboratory facilities. We participate in R&D with clinical trial research at RSCH and collaborations with the University of Surrey and National Physical Laboratory. Experience will be gained in a range of areas essential to cover all aspects of the STP syllabus whilst also allowing the chance to be involved in development and the introduction of new equipment and techniques. The Medical Physics Department has over 120 staff and during your time as an STP will have the opportunity to learn skills from all sections. The department currently has 12 STPS across the 3 year groups and so you will benefit from extensive peer support and guidance throughout your training.

Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology – Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

This post is based at Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford which is home to one of the largest medical radiation protection services in the UK. It consists of 24+ medical physicists, technicians and computer scientists providing comprehensive radiation protection, diagnostic radiology and x-ray engineering services to a wide variety of NHS Trusts, private healthcare providers, dentists, veterinary practices, industrial services and others. Experience and involvement will be gained in a huge range of new, novel and unusual areas as well as those essential to cover all aspects of the STP syllabus. Radiotherapy Physics – Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

It consists of 40+ medical physicists, technicians and radiographers providing comprehensive scientific support for dosimetry, planning and brachytherapy to the Radiotherapy Service at Royal Surrey County Hospital and its satellite radiotherapy department at East Surrey hospital in Redhill.
