This new and innovative scheme provides healthcare scientists with the unique opportunity to spend one year working in a non-clinical role at the centre of NHS England and NHS Improvement with the most senior leaders and teams in healthcare and healthcare science. The scheme is sponsored by the Chief Scientific Officer of NHS England and NHS Improvement and is managed by the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.

Professor Dame Sue Hill, Chief Scientific Officer for England said:

With this scheme, supported by the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, we can rise to the emerging challenges of the 21st century by fostering talent and preparing a cadre of capable and motivated healthcare science leaders who can confidently take their seat alongside their healthcare peers at national and local levels.

Clinical fellows lead on projects that directly contribute to national healthcare priorities and develop a range of enhanced skills required for effective leaders including:

  • leadership
  • management
  • strategy
  • project management
  • policy development

The scheme is open to qualified healthcare scientists that have not previously held a formal or senior leadership role. Full eligibility is available on the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management website. Posts are less than full time and run for one year. The scheme commences from 1st September annually.
