Role title: Assessor
Reports to: The School and the Lead Assessor
About the role
Assessors are responsible for making an independent judgment against a defined marking criterion, of a trainee’s performance in the Scientist Training Programme (STP) Final Year Assessment. Assessor are required to follow assessment process, drawing on their knowledge of practice and the specialty STP. Assessor will contribute to a decision on a trainee’s ability to practice safely, uphold professional standards and readiness to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Clinical Scientist. The School holds a bank of Assessors who meet the criteria to fulfil the role for the STP Final Year Assessment; Assessors will be required to evidence their skills and experience to join the assessor bank.
As the STP Final Year Assessment is a high stakes assessment, Assessors will be required to maintain confidentiality when engaging in the assessment. Assessors must be aware they are exercising a professional responsibility when engaging with the STP Final Year Assessment and passing judgement on trainees’ performance.
Skills and experience
Assessors should:
- have at least 2 years post registration experience of practice in the specialty
- be currently practicing in the specialty, or actively practicing within the last year of approval to enter the assessor bank
and/or
- have contemporary knowledge of practice in the specialty, in particular the standards and expectations of practice for a newly registered Clinical Scientist
- have experience of assessing healthcare professionals at this level
- be involved in the delivery of the STP specialty
Time committment
Assessors on the bank will be approached to indicate their availability for each sitting of STP Final Year Assessment. The School will run a summer and winter sitting of the STP Final Year Assessment, including specialties as required.
As the successful delivery of the assessment relies on Assessor, once they have committed to engage in a sitting of the assessment, Assessors are expected to protect the time to attend the assessment.
Prior to the assessment event itself, for each sitting Assessors will also be required to:
- attend assessor training for half a day
- attend a standardisation meeting for half a day
Expenses
Where role holders are expected to attend in-person meetings hosted by the School, the School will reimburse travel in line with the School expenses process and policy.
