Final year trainees – STP Completion 2024: important stages and deadlines

Final year trainees – now that you have sat your IACC and completed your MSc we hope that you are focusing on completing the final tasks for your OneFile e-portfolio so that you can successfully exit the STP and progress forward in your careers.

Your OneFile e-portfolio will be suspended at 5pm on Monday 16 September 2024. The School will then review all OneFile accounts and cross reference your OneFile progress with your MSc and IACC outcomes to determine your completion status. Completion status outcomes will be communicated to trainees from the week commencing 23 September 2024.

The STP final assessment for 2025

We have previously shared with you our rationale for the changes we are making to assessment of the STP following the introduction of the new curricula in 2022. This includes changing the format of the final assessment from 2025.

We are introducing the STP Final Year Assessment as the summative assessment for the STP. Trainees who joined the STP from 2022 onwards will sit the STP Final Year Assessment, with the exception of 2022 Clinical Microbiology trainees who will continue to sit the IACC.

The aim of the STP Final Year Assessment is to ensure that trainees are able to practise safely, uphold professional standards and are ready to register with the HCPC as a Clinical Scientist. To demonstrate this, trainees will be asked to describe how they would manage typical scenarios that may be faced by threshold-level, newly registered Clinical Scientists.

More information about the assessment is now available on our website. We recommend trainees who will be sitting the assessment familiarise themselves with the information linked to below.

We are continuing our preparation and planning to deliver the assessment next summer and don’t have all the details to share with you yet. We will continue to add information to the website as we progress, including information to support trainees to prepare for the assessment.

STP completion 2025 – for 2022 trainees completing in 2025 and their Training Officers

Following the introduction of the new curriculum for STP in 2022 and the reduced impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on training, the requirements for completion have returned to normal. This means that trainees who began the programme in September 2022 and who will be completing the STP in 2025 are expected to achieve the following by the published deadline of 5pm Monday 15 September 2025:

  1. 100% completion of the e-portfolio – all modules including rotations, specialist and core
  2. A pass in the MSc in Clinical Science
  3. A pass in the final year assessment (further information below)

For the e-portfolio there will no longer be a requirement for separate signature from a registered Clinical or Biomedical Scientist as all trainees must achieve 100% in order to complete the programme.
