This new apprenticeship programme is suitable for staff who have already completed the Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant Apprenticeship, or those who have equivalent medical physics experience and GCSE Science. It is also suitable for candidates who wish to undertake the Level 6 Healthcare Science Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship but don’t meet the entry requirements.
Programme details
The programme, which starts with the first cohort in August 2024, is approximately 24 months in duration. Apprentices will complete a BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science, as well as building a portfolio of evidence against the Healthcare Science Associate standard which is assessed independently by the End-Point Assessment service at the National School of Healthcare Science. Virtual classroom sessions will be delivered via Microsoft Teams by a tutor from the CSR Scientific Training Group.
Apprentices will have 20% ‘off the job training’ within their normal working hours to complete the apprenticeship. For example this would be 1 day per week for a full time candidate. Within that time apprentices will attend the taught diploma course, meet with their tutor, complete assignments, or complete training/shadowing to learn new skills as set out within the learning requirements. The training assessor will make arrangements to carry out workplace observations; this will provide the evidence to meet requirements for the apprenticeship work-based standard.
Entry requirements
- Level 2 Healthcare Science Diploma or equivalent Level 2 Science qualification plus Medical Physics experience.
- Level 2 English and Maths (Equivalent to GCSE English pass grade 9 to 4 (A* to C). Candidates will be required to submit certificates or complete Level 2 English and Maths functional skills.
- Candidates must have lived in the UK/EU for at least 3 years and also not have a qualification higher in the same field e.g BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science – three Medical Physics Technology specialisms (to be eligible for apprenticeship levy funding).
