Nearly 120 new trainers from across the various specialisms participated in the Train the Trainer event on 8 June in Birmingham.

This year we re-structured the agenda in response to feedback from previous events. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the role and responsibilities of a training officer, work based assessments and the forthcoming Annual Review of Progression.

We were also joined by an experienced STP trainer and two current STP trainees;

  • Samantha Butler, Principle Clinical Scientist, Regional Genetics Laboratory, Birmingham who provided the STP trainer’s perspective of the role;
  • Gavin Ryan, Genetics Trainee, Birmingham Women’s Hospital, who gave an account of the work based assessments from a trainee’s perspective
  • Kevin Alty, Radiotherapy Physics Trainee, Castle Hill Hospital, who gave a talk on reflection and reflective practice.

For the first time, one of our lay advisors, Maggie Stubbs joined us to speak about patient and public involvement.

Feedback was very positive and we are already planning the next event in the autumn. We will notify departments as soon as a date and venue has been confirmed.
