Shortlisting

If you pass the situational judgement test, your application is assessed by a shortlisting panel and scored against the person specification.

The panel members do not have access to your:

  • equal opportunities data
  • fitness to practice data
  • employment history sections of the application form
  • personal data

The highest scoring applicants within the specialty group will then progress to interview stage and some may be placed into interview reserve. After shortlist release applicants will be contacted via Oriel with further information regarding their Oriel application status change.

Shortlisting outcomes

When shortlisting is complete your status on Oriel will change to one of the following:

  • Interview – you will be invited to interview. Please wait to be contacted by the interviewing organisation.
  • Shortlisted reserve – you may be invited to interview, possibly at short notice, if an interview slot becomes available. We will contact you if you are the next ranked reserve.
  • Shortlist unsuccessful – your application will not progress any further.

Sub-preferences - the applicant's choice of employer and location

If successfully shortlisted you will be asked to select and rank your sub-preference choices for as many locations/employers you are willing to train at, from the list of those available.

  • Applicants can only select their sub-preferences within the window published; these are available on the key deadline dates page.
  • Details of the locations and specialties/themes of all available training posts will be published prior to the sub-preference window. These details are regularly updated to reflect any changes to commissions that occur during the application process.
  • To select your sub-preferences, drag and drop your choices from the not wanted column to the wanted column. The drag and drop option is not available whilst using a touch screen device (e.g. phone or tablet), therefore it is highly recommended that you use a PC or laptop.
  • You can choose as many locations as you wish. The locations must be ranked from the top choice onwards. You will need to save your selections as there is no submit button.
  • You may amend your choices up to the sub-preference closing date. Remember to save your selection each time an amendment is made.
  • The sub-preferencing section in Oriel will remain highlighted in the Oriel progress bar throughout the sub-preferencing window, regardless of whether you have already saved your sub-preferences. On the progress bar this section will remain amber, turning green after the closing date/time.
  • Think carefully when choosing your sub-preferences as this is where you will be living and working in person for the next 3 years. We recommend that you:
    • Complete some research on what it is like to live in the area.
    • Think about whether you want to be based in a city or a more rural location?
    • Communicate with STP trainees and networks via social media to see what it is like to live, work and study in that region.
    • Does the location contain the facilities you need?
    • Consider the time and distance from your support network.
  • You must only choose locations that you genuinely want to apply for and will accept if offered.
  • The location(s) you select are your own personal choice and as such you are expected to be aware of the travel requirements and financial implications. You will not receive expenses for attending your contracted workplace or for relocation costs.
  • It is your responsibility to complete adequate research on the Trust/Organisation and location. Many Trusts contain multiple sites and you may be required to travel to these throughout the duration of the programme.
