The Lancashire Cardiac Centre is a tertiary cardiac provider for the people of Lancashire and Cumbria, a population of 1.6 million. Our department supports both adult and paediatric services across 6 hospitals and comprises laboratories on both the Oxford Road Campus and Wythenshawe sites. The laboratories are extensively equipped with Roche Cobas analysers for core chemistries and immunoassay, several HPLC systems, extensive mass spectrometry equipment and expertise, an established POCT team, and one of the largest newborn screening services in the UK. As a training centre we will ensure you are fully supported to gain experience across the full repertoire of services we offer within the Dept. Rotations in other blood sciences disciplines are conveniently located on site, as well as being a stones throw from Manchester University for the taught elements of the programme.

Job purpose

In conjunction with and supported by the designated Training Coordinator/Officer, the Trainee Healthcare Scientist will be responsible for their own progression through the training programme, for completing the learning outcomes as outlined in the Learning Guides, progressing through a mixture of work based competence and experience in NHS scientific departments and undertaking the complementary academic master’s programme at the designated Higher Education Institution. At all times the Trainee Healthcare Scientist is expected to work within standard operating policies and procedures of the host department and NHS organisation and adhere to high standards of professionalism, health and safety, risk reduction, confidentiality, patient care and dignity, and respect for equality and diversity as set out in the NHS Constitution. This post is for 1x STP direct-entry trainee specialising in Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology. The trainee would be predominantly based at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Liverpool (CCCL), but will also be expected to travel to the Wirral site as required. The Wirral site can be reached from CCCL by a 30 minute drive, or a short train journey and a bus or walk from Spital rail station. The hosting department currently supports 5 CT, 2 PET/CT, 2 fluoroscopy suites, a mobile C-arm, a mobile x-ray set, 3 planar x-ray rooms, 1 SPECT/CT, and a Radium therapy service. The ‘ionising imaging physics’ team of 5 also has a non-ionising counterpart of 3 (who will be also looking to recruit a trainee in 2024), and is part of a larger physics team comprising roughly 40 radiotherapy physics colleagues including more than 10 radiotherapy specialist STP trainees at any one time.

Main duties of the job

You will be based within the radiotherapy physics department at Preston but, during your 3 years, will travel to other hospital sites in the North West to complete all the required aspects of your STP training. During your training you will also travel to the University of Liverpool to complete an MSc in Medical Physics.

Working for your organisation

Rosemere Cancer Centre is on the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Royal Preston Hospital site and provides an external beam radiotherapy service for the adult population of Lancashire and South Cumbria (1.6 million population). The centre has: Seven clinical Elekta linacs, all with CBCT, and many with flattening filter free treatment capability and equipped with Response ABC system; Two dedicated Philips Big Bore CT scanners; Vision RT surface guided technology in routine clinical use; MOSAIQ® and SYNERGISTIQ™.

Treatment planning and virtual simulation is conducted on Pinnacle throughout the department. Some treatment planning is also being carried out on Raystation. Rosemere is currently commissioned to provide SABR for primary lung tumours and oligometasteses (non-spine and spine, lung and liver) in addition to intracranial SRS. Exciting developments include: Roll out use of Vision RT surface guided technology for site other than breast. System already in use for breast and thorax patients; Commissioning of SABR for adrenal metastases; Roll out of use of AI for contouring; Evaluation of PerFraction for independent dose check of treatment plans.

The Respiratory department is a large department offering diagnostic services for over 40 Respiratory Clinical Consultants offering a full range of tests ranging from Spirometry to CPET to oxygen assessments. You will be primarily based within the respiratory sleep service at Salford Royal which sits within the respiratory nursing team, comprising the Sleep and Non-invasive ventilation service, Home Oxygen Team, Chronic Airways Support Team, Pulmonary Rehabilitation Team, Respiratory Specialist Nurses, Smoking Cessation and Lung Cancer. This will allow for spoke placements to enhance your learning experience.
