We are seeking a motivated individual to join Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) on a fixed term contract of 3 years. As part of the programme you will complete rotations in physiological sciences during the first year and the remainder of the programme will be working within Audiology. This training is combined with an academic programme at master’s (MSc) level over the three year programme.

Main duties of the job

Completing the Scientist Training Programme (STP) will include rotations across different specialities within NUH and working across all areas of audiology. This will be alongside the academic programme.

Nottingham Audiology has a long history of successfully training Clinical Scientists. Ongoing support from the Training Lead and their team is available throughout the three years and for the research elements of the MSc. We are a large team of Audiologists and have specialised clinics for; complex audiological cases, bone conduction hearing implants, tinnitus, dementia, paediatrics, evoked potentials, vestibular diagnostics and vestibular rehabilitation. We also share a site with the Nottingham Audiology Implant Programme. We have a strong record of investing in both the professional and clinical development of all our staff.

Clinic work will be primary based at Ropewalk House and Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham which are both in close proximity to Nottingham city centre.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will complete the full STP syllabus, including studying the MSc in Audiology at Manchester University and completion of all required rotations. Whilst much of the time is spent under direct supervision, towards the end of the training programme it is expected that some clinics are carried out under indirect supervision.

At Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust we provide a comprehensive audiology service covering all audiological disciplines. Our adult audiology service includes the fitting of routine and non-routine hearing aids, complex diagnostics, vestibular assessment. hearing therapy and tinnitus management. Our paediatric audiology service includes assessing babies referred from the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme, the behavioural and objective assessment of children of all ages and the habilitation of children with hearing loss. We also have an auditory implant programme where we assess patients’ suitability for Cochlear Implants, Bone Anchored Hearing Aids and Middle Ear Implants, and manage the fitting, programming, maintenance, and evaluation of these devices. You would be joining a large team comprising Clinical Scientists (Audiology), audiologists, assistant audiologists and administrative colleagues. We have significant experience of training including degree apprenticeship and PTP schemes as well as the STP programme, and the department has a designated Audiology Training Lead. The service has undergone significant development over recent years, and we are actively working towards IQIPS accreditation. You will be based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, although occasional travel to clinics across Oxfordshire may be required (e.g. Banbury, Didcot, Wantage). We have an established Practice Learning and Support Unit who facilitate training and education across multiple professions within the organisation. We are currently seeking a STP trainee to join our team in the Audiology Department at York Hospital. The post-holder will undergo supervised training in all areas of Adult and Paediatric Audiology including diagnostic and rehabilitation work leading to the registration as a clinical scientist (Audiology). The 1st year will include completion of an MSc in Audiology with a further 2 Years being at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This is a 3 year fixed term (supernumerary) contract. The trainee will work closely with the training coordinator/officer and more senior members of staff to follow the curriculum for the Scientist Training Programme. The trainee will work in specified areas of the department and be responsible to the Designated Training Coordinator/Officer for their own work and progression through the scheme. All trainees will be expected to travel to national academic and other courses regularly throughout their training – in some cases this may involve overnight and/or residential stays. Trainees will undertake a master’s degree course at a designated academic institution specific for the training pathway
