Barts Health Centre for Reproductive Medicine at St Bart’s Hospital in London will be the host unit for your training post. First year rotations in Genomics and Genetic Counselling are led by Great Ormond Street Hospital and the dates for this will be shared when you start with us. The academic part of your course will be based in Manchester and opportunities for attending conferences and training sessions will be arranged for you during the second and third year.

Based in host training department at Old St Marys Hospital on the main Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) site, with regular travel to academic institution and rotation into hospitals usually local to host department for completion of curriculum and learning outcomes.

Job purpose

In conjunction with and supported by the designated Training Coordinator/Officer, the Trainee Healthcare Scientist will be responsible for their own progression through the training programme, for completing the learning outcomes as outlined in the Learning Guides, progressing through a mixture of work based competence and experience in NHS scientific departments and undertaking the complementary academic master’s programme at the designated Higher Education Institution. At all times the Trainee Healthcare Scientist is expected to work within standard operating policies and procedures of the host department and NHS organisation and adhere to high standards of professionalism, health and safety, risk reduction, confidentiality, patient care and dignity, and respect for equality and diversity as set out in the NHS Constitution. The Trainee Healthcare Scientist (insert pathway) will be employed by the host department for a fixed term of three years, during which time they will work through a full-time programme combining work based learning and a part-time academic programme at master’s (MSc) level. The post holder will follow the curriculum as detailed on the NSHCS website.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s biggest providers of integrated hospital and community-based healthcare, providing a comprehensive range of local and tertiary services to the residents of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Mid Yorkshire and North Derbyshire and also some highly specialist services to all parts of England. We have a history of delivering high quality care, training and developing high calibre multidisciplinary health professionals, clinical excellence and innovation in medical research. The successful applicant will be primarily based within the Assisted Conception Unit at the Jessop Wing. We provide a range of fertility services, including fertility preservation, pre-implantation genetic testing and gamete donation. Rotational training will be provided by staff at the Andrology Department (Jessop Wing) and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where the genetics service is based. All sites are located approximately 1 mile from Sheffield city centre and are accessible by public transport. Car parking is available at general public pay-and-display rates.
