The successful candidate will work within the Respiratory Physiology team at this busy London Teaching Hospital, while training to be a Clinical Scientist and studying for a fully funded MSc as part of the National STP programme. This role will be based mainly at Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Denmark Hill, London SE5 9RS, but there will be a requirement for some elements of the training programme to be delivered ay Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. You will join a large team of Respiratory Physiologists of varying grades and contribute to a full range of Respiratory Physiology procedures. These will include full lung function tests, specialist lung function tests, diagnostic sleep studies and treatment of sleep disordered breathing with CPAP and BiPAP. Working for Our Organisation

The Respiratory Physiology department part of the Northwest Lung Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital is looking to recruit a Trainee Healthcare Scientist. The Northwest Lung Centre is an internationally renowned centre for the treatment of Respiratory Conditions and Allergy.
The Respiratory department is a large department offering diagnostic services for over 40 Respiratory Clinical Consultants offering a full range of tests ranging from Spirometry to CPET to oxygen assessments. We have a sister department that run all our Sleep Diagnostics and you will have full rotation to this large tertiary sleep centre offering polysomnography and MSLT.

As a successful trainee you will observe and contribute complex scientific and clinical tasks, including working directly with a broad range of patients from divers backgrounds.
Building the skills to analyse, interpret and compare investigative and clinical options, make judgements, including clinical and differential judgements, involving complicated facts or situations that impact on patients care. Initiate and undertake innovation, improvement and R&D and be involved in the education of healthcare science trainees and other learners in the workplace. You will be expected to complete all work-based training and assessment alongside the academic master’s course to exit the programme with eligibility for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and use of the protected title of Clinical Scientist.
In addition, you will be expected to undertake work based experience to enable you to communicate complex technical, scientific and sensitive information to colleagues within your department in both verbal and written forms.Trainees must meet the HCPC’s standards for training, professional skills, behaviour and health.

This will allow for spoke placements to enhance your learning experience. You will also spend time within the cardiorespiratory investigations department where you will gain experience in lung function, exercise testing, PSG set-up and other respiratory investigations, neurophysiology for MSLT and actigraphy as well as opportunity to spend some time with our neurologist/neuropsychiatrists with special interest in sleep. Salford Royal sits within the Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust and there may be opportunity to get some additional experience at the service at Fairfield in Bury.

Respiratory and sleep science is one of the most exciting and dynamic areas to work in at University Hospitals Birmingham (UH). We are a unique team who work across the 5 sites of UHB to deliver a diverse range of lung function and sleep diagnostic tests and treatments. The services have developed a range of scientist led services including sleep diagnostics and home none-invasive ventilation that are led by Consultant Clinical Scientists. With over 50 scientific and technical team members and a number highly specialist services including complex sleep diagnostics, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and home ventilation, there are many opportunities to develop your scientific skills and expertise working across the sites. The service is predominantly outpatient within the dedicated Respiratory and Sleep Physiology departments at Royal Stoke and County Hospitals. UHNM runs a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment service. We are looking to recruit a highly motivated, enthusiastic and reliable individual to join and lead the physiology team based at the Respiratory Physiology, Royal Stoke University Hospital, which extends to the County site.
