The main base for the training post at NHS East and South East London Pathology will be at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, but during the 3 years you will visit our Barts, Newham, Whipps Cross, Homerton and Lewisham and Greenwich sites for clinical experience. The department is one of the largest in the UK, with specialist services including LC-MS/MS, HPLC, atomic absorption and proteins. We provide clinical and technical POCT support across the partnership trusts. We serve specialist clinical services across Barts Health, which has the largest cardiovascular centre in the UK, the second largest cancer centre in London, one of the largest children’s hospitals in the UK and leading endocrinology, stroke and renal units. We also have strong links with adult and paediatric endocrine, nutrition and ICU teams. The genetics rotation in year 1 and paediatrics in year 3 is hosted by Great Ormond Street Hospital. The trainee will join a team of 3 Consultants, 8 Clinical Scientists and 3 trainees.

Clinical Immunology – Barts Health NHS Trust

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers. Clinical Immunology trainees will be based at the Immunology department, in a purpose-built Pathology and Pharmacy Building at the Royal London Hospital. The department provides a full consultant-led service for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with immunodeficiencies, autoimmune diseases and allergic conditions. It is involved in translational research and has a range of specialist manual assays. It is also a national referral centre for some biological monitoring tests. The laboratory has close links with the other blood science specialisms and clinical teams, enabling trainees to gain experience of working with a wide range of colleagues.

Embryology – Barts Health NHS Trust

Barts Health Centre for Reproductive Medicine at St Bart’s Hospital in London will be the host unit for your training post. First year rotations in Genomics and Genetic Counselling are led by Great Ormond Street Hospital and the dates for this will be shared when you start with us. The academic part of your course will be based in Manchester and opportunities for attending conferences and training sessions will be arranged for you during the second and third year.

The Laboratory sits within the Blood Sciences division of the NHS East and Southeast London Pathology Partnership, which provides pathology services to the Homerton, Lewisham and Greenwich and the Barts Health NHS Trusts. The laboratory supports adult and paediatric stem cell transplantation, adult kidney transplantation, paediatric heart, lung and thymus transplantation as well as a variety of immunogenetics services.

There are 3 posts available at Barts Health NHS as part of the Respiratory and Sleep Science consortia, which will be site-based. We are looking to recruit 1 student each for the following sites:

1. The Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel – Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Service
2. St Bartholomew’s Hospital, W Smithfield – Adult Respiratory and Sleep service
3. Whipps Cross Hospital, Whipps Cross Road – Adult Respiratory and Sleep service

The choice of post/site will be decided in collaboration with the trainees once they have been allocated to the consortia through the national recruitment process. Although as part of the Barts Health consortia, all trainees will spend some time at each site during the 3 year programme, to gain experience of different working environments and specialised lung function and sleep investigations.
