East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust (EKHUFT) is one of the largest acute Trusts in England, serving a population of more than 750,000 people. The Pathology department has laboratories on the three acute hospital sites at Ashford, Canterbury and Margate. EKHUFT Pathology is part of the Kent and Medway Pathology Network, which is entering an exciting time with changing IT and laboratory technology. As an STP trainee in EKHUFT Biochemistry you will be joining a team of 23 biomedical scientists, 7 qualified clinical scientists and 2 other STP trainees. The department is very experienced in clinical scientist training, having hosted a trainee every year for more than 20 years. There are regular journal club meetings with the clinical scientists and chemical pathologists across the Network.

STP trainees are based at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford with opportunities to spend time at Canterbury, Margate and the other hospitals within the Network. There will also be work placements at London teaching hospitals. All travel will be funded for visits to other sites.

East Kent is a delightful place to live with a fantastic coastline, beautiful countryside and villages, the cathedral city of Canterbury and excellent transport links to London.

As a professionally diverse team the philosophy of the Microbiology service is to strive for excellence, with Quality and Service Improvement at the heart of everything we do. We are proud to be accredited by UKAS to ISO 15189:2012 standards. In this post we can offer you a rewarding, flexible and supportive role, providing a wide scope of microbiology services, using up to date and innovative technology. We offer a full package of benefits, including a car lease scheme; on-site childcare; generous annual leave in line with NHS terms and conditions; high street and public transport discounts; a 24/7 staff support service – and the little things that make life easier, like on-site Amazon lockers and fresh fruit and veg stalls.

We are one of the largest hospital trusts in England, with three acute hospitals and community sites serving a local population of around 700,000. We also provide specialist services for Kent and Medway. We care about our patients and our people. We are focused on providing outstanding, safe patient care, and a positive working culture that benefits staff and patients alike. With our emphasis on staff training and development, a staff support scheme that’s second to none, and a healthy package of benefits, it’s easy to put down roots in East Kent Hospitals. Our service has been a training centre for STP and HSST posts since 2016 and our growing team of Clinical Scientists support the scientific, quality and managerial aspects of our service as well as clinical duties. The microbiology service is centralised on one site at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, which is the base site for this post. We provide a wide range of bacteriology, virology, molecular, parasitology and mycology diagnostic tests for all our acute sites and community services, totalling approximately 600,000+ samples per year.
