The Department of Clinical Biochemistry in Manchester University NHS Trust has extensive experience and is an accredited training centre for STP and HSST posts. Our department supports both adult and paediatric services across 6 hospitals and comprises laboratories on both the Oxford Road Campus and Wythenshawe sites. The laboratories are extensively equipped with Roche Cobas analysers for core chemistries and immunoassay, several HPLC systems, extensive mass spectrometry equipment and expertise, an established POCT team, and one of the largest newborn screening services in the UK. As a training centre we will ensure you are fully supported to gain experience across the full repertoire of services we offer within the Dept. Rotations in other blood sciences disciplines are conveniently located on site, as well as being a stones throw from Manchester University for the taught elements of the programme.

Based in host training department at Old St Marys Hospital on the main Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) site, with regular travel to academic institution and rotation into hospitals usually local to host department for completion of curriculum and learning outcomes.

Job purpose

In conjunction with and supported by the designated Training Coordinator/Officer, the Trainee Healthcare Scientist will be responsible for their own progression through the training programme, for completing the learning outcomes as outlined in the Learning Guides, progressing through a mixture of work based competence and experience in NHS scientific departments and undertaking the complementary academic master’s programme at the designated Higher Education Institution. At all times the Trainee Healthcare Scientist is expected to work within standard operating policies and procedures of the host department and NHS organisation and adhere to high standards of professionalism, health and safety, risk reduction, confidentiality, patient care and dignity, and respect for equality and diversity as set out in the NHS Constitution. The Trainee Healthcare Scientist (insert pathway) will be employed by the host department for a fixed term of three years, during which time they will work through a full-time programme combining work based learning and a part-time academic programme at master’s (MSc) level. The post holder will follow the curriculum as detailed on the NSHCS website.

The Adult Histopathology Department at MFT is run on two sites: Wythenshawe and Oxford Road Campus. Training will be conducted on both sites depending on the speciality and techniques to be covered (e.g. breast and lung work is predominantly located at Wythenshawe whilst ORC receives more gynaecology specimens and has the Electron Microscopy service). There is a MFT shuttle bus service between both sites available for staff and trainees.

The Respiratory Physiology department part of the Northwest Lung Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital is looking to recruit a Trainee Healthcare Scientist. The Northwest Lung Centre is an internationally renowned centre for the treatment of Respiratory Conditions and Allergy.
The Respiratory department is a large department offering diagnostic services for over 40 Respiratory Clinical Consultants offering a full range of tests ranging from Spirometry to CPET to oxygen assessments. We have a sister department that run all our Sleep Diagnostics and you will have full rotation to this large tertiary sleep centre offering polysomnography and MSLT.

As a successful trainee you will observe and contribute complex scientific and clinical tasks, including working directly with a broad range of patients from divers backgrounds.
Building the skills to analyse, interpret and compare investigative and clinical options, make judgements, including clinical and differential judgements, involving complicated facts or situations that impact on patients care. Initiate and undertake innovation, improvement and R&D and be involved in the education of healthcare science trainees and other learners in the workplace. You will be expected to complete all work-based training and assessment alongside the academic master’s course to exit the programme with eligibility for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and use of the protected title of Clinical Scientist.
In addition, you will be expected to undertake work based experience to enable you to communicate complex technical, scientific and sensitive information to colleagues within your department in both verbal and written forms.Trainees must meet the HCPC’s standards for training, professional skills, behaviour and health.
