Cardiac Science – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
We are one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, providing services for up to 1.9 million people living in the South Hampshire and the Channel Islands. We offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. University Hospital Southampton is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care. The Technical Cardiology Unit is supported by a team of over 65 qualified Clinical Physiologists and support staff. Services are provided to both the adult and paediatric population and this provides a breadth of exposure to a varied case mix for physiologists working in the department. The departmental ethos is to continually improve and provide excellent patient care.
Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. Clinical Bioinformatics Genomics – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
The Wessex Genomics Laboratory Service (WGLS) is a new integrated genomics testing service managed by University Hospital Southampton and formed from the amalgamation of Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory, now WGLS (Salisbury), and Molecular Pathology, now WGLS (Southampton). This training post will be primarily based at the Salisbury site but will require travel to Southampton for some rotation modules.
Clinical Immunology – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
You will be joining a growing team of Immunology Scientists led by a strong Consultant Team. The Immunology Laboratory at Southampton General Hospital processes around 300 samples per day with a test repertoire that supports a large teaching hospital and provides a referral service to regional laboratories. Clinical specialties that the laboratory supports include: Cancer Care, Rheumatology, Renal, Clinical Haematology, Clinical Immunology and Allergy. The laboratory is directed by the regional Immunology service and has direct links with the Wessex Investigational Sciences Hub laboratory (WISH Lab) that delivers bespoke translational research services to regulatory standards. The department has a strong record in the training of STP and HSST Clinical Scientists and supports both Scientist and Medical trainees through to gaining FRCPath.
Genomic Counselling – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
The Wessex Clinical Genetics Service serves a population of over 3 million patients across the region. Clinical Genetics clinics take place across University Hospital Southampton sites as well as peripheral clinics at other hospitals in Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset. STP trainees are therefore expected to arrange their own travel to and from clinics, and rotational elements of training that may take place away from the base hospital.
Imaging with non-Ionising Radiation – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
We are seeking an enthusiastic physicist to join the Medical Physics team at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) NHS Foundation Trust. UHS is one of the biggest employers in the region with over 10,000 staff and a strong healthcare science workforce and clinical-academic integration with the University of Southampton. The MR Physics group provides support to a large Radiology department within UHS, with 6 MRI scanners (4 x 1.5T and 2 x 3T, including one dedicated cardiac MRI scanner) at UHS, as well as several external clients. New and additional scanners will be coming on-line at UHS in the next 1-2 years, including intraoperative MRI. One 3T scanner at UHS provides capacity for dedicated research sessions, with high demand for R&D support in neuro, oncology, lung and liver/abdominal MRI. We also deliver specialist services covering MR quality assurance (QA), safety and clinical service development, and other exciting new opportunities are arising due to continued investment in clinical innovation and research in Southampton. This post is an excellent training opportunity for a motivated physicist to specialise in imaging with non-ionising radiation, especially if you have an interest in MR physics, in a large regional hospital. There may be a small amount of travel to other sites required (eg for some of the ultrasound training components) and significant amounts of time spent at KCL for the MSc.
Nuclear Medicine – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
We are seeking an enthusiastic physicist to join the Medical Physics team at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) NHS Foundation Trust. UHS is one of the biggest employers in the region with over 10,000 staff and a strong healthcare science workforce and clinical-academic integration with the University of Southampton. We encourage trainees to be actively involved in providing these services.
We are based at Southampton General Hospital but trainees may travel to other sites around Hampshire and Isle of Wight as part of delivering our services. Rotations in the other areas of Medical Physics are all delivered at the Southampton General site. There may be a small amount of day travel to other hospitals in the region for specialist and rotation training. The MSc for our STP training is delivered by Kings College London with lectures delivered predominantly in the first three months of the post then for occasional week blocks during the rest of the course.
