Cardiology at University Hospital Birmingham is a kind, dynamic and ambitious growing department. Our site is set over four hospitals. For this post you will predominantly be based at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), which is located just outside the city. There are good transport links with a train station under five minutes’ walk from the department as well as a good bus network. There is the potential for onsite parking depending on how far you live from the trust. There are some aspects of the rotational modules that will require students to be flexible with going to other hospitals to achieve their competencies. We have good working relationships within the region to support this.
Our department currently supports one STP and one HSST. As well as apprentices at levels 2-6, so we have a wealth of experience in supporting students along different training pathways. Our student mentors are dedicated, supportive and encouraging, helping their mentees to reach their full potential.
We have a well-established Echocardiography service that holds departmental BSE accreditation. The echo services offers specialist echo including Transoesophageal Echocardiography, Stress Echocardiography, Adult congenital Heart disease (ACHD), Physiologist lead contrast studies and valve clinics. We have a strong invasive service, having 4 catheter labs at QEH which offers a 24-hour primary PCI service. The labs also support intervention such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), MitraClip and ACHD structural procedures. Our cardiac rhythm management (CRM) team have a presence at British Heart Rhythm Society (BHRS) and we activity encourage national and international collaboration. Across the department, we are developing our CRM Physiologist Led services.

There are automation laboratories across all four hospital sites (Heartlands, Good Hope, Solihull and Queen Elizabeth hospitals), with the automation laboratories at QE and Heartlands sites being large, state of the art laboratories fitted with Abbott pre-analytics, Abbott Alinity platforms and tracks. The post holder will based in our automated laboratories on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Heartlands Hospital sites but may need to travel to our Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital sites, on occasion. There is a large team of Clinical Scientists who support the Clinical Scientists training programme at University Hospitals Birmingham which consists of 3 Consultant Clinical Scientists, 4 Principal Clinical Scientists, 11 Senior Clinical Scientists and currently 3 trainee Clinical Scientists.
Imaging with non-Ionising Radiation – University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

RRPPS is the Radiation Protection Service of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. RRPPS employs around 40 staff across scientific, technical and administrative disciplines. We provide both ionising and non-ionising radiation protection and medical physics services to the Imaging and Radiotherapy Departments of Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals and to a number of external customers throughout the West Midlands and beyond. Training will be based between RRPPS in Kings Norton, Birmingham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Some parts of rotations will also be based the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Heritage Building) Cancer Centre. This means some travel around the region will be required throughout the training, but it is often possible to organise lifts with supervising staff and access to departmental pool cars can be arranged.

Our Radiotherapy Physics team has around 50 scientific and technical staff working in conjunction with clinical colleagues to provide approximately 4,500 new patients per year with World Class radiotherapy treatments. We utilise 6 Elekta Versa Llinar accelerators with Flattening Filter Free (FFF) functionality, a Tomotherapy HD, a Radixact unit with kVCT imaging, and a Cyberknife unit. We also have two wide-bore CT scanners, a dedicated brachytherapy suite and an XStrahl orthovoltage system. Our new equipment programme means an on-site MRI scanner and a second Radixact will be installed soon.

Respiratory and sleep science is one of the most exciting and dynamic areas to work in at University Hospitals Birmingham (UH). We are a unique team who work across the 5 sites of UHB to deliver a diverse range of lung function and sleep diagnostic tests and treatments. The services have developed a range of scientist led services including sleep diagnostics and home none-invasive ventilation that are led by Consultant Clinical Scientists. With over 50 scientific and technical team members and a number highly specialist services including complex sleep diagnostics, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and home ventilation, there are many opportunities to develop your scientific skills and expertise working across the sites. The service has close links with the University of Birmingham to ensure that research is at the heart of the services that we deliver.
The teams have an excellent record of supporting and developing healthcare scientists at all levels from Level 2 apprenticeships through to Consultant Clinical Scientists trainees, with experienced and dedicated trainers and mentors to ensure our trainees are inspired to develop and apply their scientific knowledge and skills.
