The STP trainee will be based at Bedford for Laboratory training and rotations. The trainee will be expected to commute between Bedford and Luton for Clinical training and engagements. Library facilities are available on both Luton and Bedford sites.

Clinical Microbiology – Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust
The trainee will be principally based at the Microbiology department at Frimley Park Hospital. Time will also be spent at our Wexham Park Microbiology department and our Virology department based at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey. In the first year, there will be a rotation to our Molecular Diagnostics department based at the Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford and in subsequent years placements will be arranged at the UK Health Security Agency.

Clinical Microbiology – Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The trainee will be based at Royal Preston Hospital. There may be an opportunity to attend ward rounds and clinics at Chorley hospital, and a shuttle bus is provided. We are building a collaboration with other trusts in our pathology network (Blackburn, Blackpool and Morecombe Bay). There may be opportunities to visit some of these sites to gain additional experience.

Clinical Microbiology – The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Newcastle is a vibrant city providing exciting opportunities for students, early career scientists and businesses alike. Newcastle Hospitals Trust has three main clinical sites (Royal Victoria Infirmary, Freeman Hospital and Centre for Life). Microbiology and Virology Services are based at the Freeman Hospital however trainees will undertake clinical training across all sites. We have excellent public transport links including greener travel options and there is free transport between sites for staff every 20 mins during core hours.

Clinical Microbiology – The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust
The Black Country Pathology Service (BCPS) has been formed by four Trusts; The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, (DGFT), The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, (RWT), Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, (SWBH) and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, (WHT).The BCPS provides a comprehensive pathology service to a population of approximately 1.76 million. The hub laboratory is located at New Cross Hospital and hosted by The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.
The trainee will be based within the hub laboratory, with clinical modules based across both WHT and RWT, therefore travel between these 2 sites will be expected and good transport links are available. The trainee will participate in laboratory and clinical training with both Biomedical Scientists and our Consultant Microbiologists. This will include, but not limited to, gaining competency within certain aspects of the service and providing clinical advice to service users over the phone and attending in person ward rounds.

Clinical Microbiology – Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
The Chester & Wirral microbiology service is hosted by Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The trust is responsible for Arrowe Park Hospital, Clatterbridge Hospital, and Wirral Women and Children’s Hospital. The microbiology laboratory performs a wide range of microbiology investigations including bacteriology, virology and mycology. The trainee will be based at Arrowe Park Hospital with the Wirral clinical microbiology team and will be expected to travel between Arrowe Park Hospital and the off-site Chester & Wirral microbiology laboratory in Bromborough Wirral.

Clinical Microbiology – Wye Valley NHS Trust
This post is based at Wye Valley NHS Trust, part of an NHS Foundation Group with South Warwickshire NHS FT, George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust, and Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. Located near the Black Mountains on the Wales border, we provide acute and community services across Herefordshire and parts of Powys, operating Hereford County Hospital and community hospitals in Bromyard, Leominster, and Ross-on-Wye.
As a progressive trust, we aim to enhance care quality through collaboration. Our microbiology service covers traditional and modern methods like multiplex PCR and MALDI-TOF. The majority of training will take place at Hereford County hospital, but there will be some training placements in other hospitals in the West Midlands to cover gaps in the STP portfolio. These are all accessible by public transport if required.
