Gastrointestinal Physiology – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
STP training in GI Physiology at University Hospital Southampton is based in the GI Physiology Unit on the main hospital site, Southampton General Hospital. You will receive training within the unit on a full range of diagnostic tests including high resolution oesophageal manometry with impedance, pH/impedance monitoring, wireless pH monitoring, high resolution anorectal manometry, endoanal ultrasound and hydrogen breath testing for both adults and paediatrics. There is no regular expectation to travel to any other sites but we have good links with other GI physiology units in the region and you will be encouraged to visit other departments on occasion to gain experience of how GI Physiology departments are set up and run in other hospitals.
We are an established unit attracting referrals from a large area and with good MDT links with both gastroenterology and colorectal surgery. Clinical scientists regularly attend pelvic floor, upper GI physiology and paediatric GI physiology MDT meetings. In the unit, we work alongside a team of physiotherapists and nurses who provide a conservative therapy, physiotherapy and biofeedback for patients with a range of bowel and pelvic floor conditions. There is excellent hospital-wide support for healthcare science trainees with a designated lead for healthcare science linking trainees and training departments together to support with training and training themes common to all disciplines.
