Trainees will be based at Birmingham Women’s Hospital but will attend clinics around the west midlands area on a regular basis to gain a breadth of experience. Therefore travel will be required. We operate a flexible hybrid model of working that facilitates some working from home and flexible working. We are a large centre with an extensive range of specialist clinics with GC involvement, including joint PGT clinics. We benefit from learning and interventions from Psychologists and a mutually respectful and co-operative multidisciplinary team.

Genomic Counselling – Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust

The trainee will be primarily based at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Part of the Introduction to Genomics in Mainstream Healthcare rotation in year one will be at other hospitals around London. We also have peripheral clinics in our patch so occasionally students will be asked to travel to these hospitals. There are good transport links for these areas.

Trainees will be based within the main genetics department at Heavitree Hospital in Exeter. This is within a 15 minutes walk to the genomics laboratory on a neighbouring hospital site which hosts first year rotations. We have satellite offices in Plymouth and Truro where it would be expected for trainees to include time between centres during the second year of training. Generally clinics and specialist MDTs can be held in several different sites throughout Devon and Cornwall including North Devon and Torbay.

The trainee will also need to travel to clinics we hold across South London, Surrey and West Sussex as required. STP Genomic Counselling training in Newcastle will support trainees to gain experience across multiple specialties. We are a small supportive team of genetic counsellors, genomic practitioners and genetic nurse specialists. We have good links to hospitals across the region for insight into and experience of mainstreaming pathways. The role will mainly be based within the Clinical Genetics Department. This is off the main hospital site based in the Life Centre. We are a regional service covering all of the North East and North Cumbria and so some travel between sites may be necessary but there are good transport links and often the opportunity to travel with other team members.

Genomic Counselling – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

The Wessex Clinical Genetics Service (WCGS) serves a population of over 3 million patients across the region. The WCGS department is located at the Princess Anne Hospital, Southampton, which is the base hospital for STP trainees in Genomic Counselling. Clinical Genetics clinics take place across University Hospital Southampton sites as well as peripheral clinics at other hospitals in Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset. STP trainees are expected to arrange their own travel to and from clinics, and rotational elements of training that may take place away from the base hospital.

Local promotion details for post(s): We participate in the University Hospital Southampton STP open day every year, to encourage potential applicants to find out more about Genomic Counselling training and meet current trainees and registered Genetic Counsellors working in the department. The open day is usually held in December each year.
