The trainee will be based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH). The department has both respiratory and sleep services at BCH. The rotations will take place within the Trust.

There is arrangements with local Birmingham Trusts such as City Hospital, Birmingham (part of Birmingham Metropolitan Hospital) to complement student’s learning in adult respiratory physiology. Therefore, on completion of the program trainees will be competent in both paediatric and adult respiratory physiology assessments.

The department is also working with other Trusts in Birmingham to explore options for some rotation experience in adult setting in specialties other than respiratory. We anticipate to have all this placements planned prior to the start of the trainee on the role in September 2025. Hence, there might be a need to travel between local Trusts to achieve competency in both paediatric and adult respiratory and sleep physiology.

The paediatric respiratory department at the Royal Brompton Hospital is a large multidisciplinary team working with children and young people with respiratory and sleep disorders. As a tertiary centre, we see a varied workload including patients with conditions like cystic fibrosis and severe therapy resistant asthma. As respiratory and sleep physiologists, we run full sleep diagnostics, and standard and specialised lung function testing.

We have strong links with our colleagues in the Royal Brompton adult lung function laboratory, adult sleep lab, and physiologists in other settings across the wider Guys and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust, which we are part of. This allows our STP trainees to complete their full range of competencies.

We are a small team with an interesting and varied workload, in a department with a strong culture of research and educational activities

This post will be predominantly based at Lymington New Forest Hospital, where there is free car parking for staff, a good bus link with the nearest main line train station being Brockenhurst. There are 3 community hospitals within our purview, so some cross site travelling would be involved. Unfortunately there is no shuttle bus or onsite accommodation. There is a Good Library onsite, with study rooms, staff facilities, an excellent subsidised cafe and a friendly working environment.

You will be based at the Respiratory Physiology department at Southmead Hospital, part of North Bristol Lung Centre. North Bristol Lung Centre is a specialist centre for severe asthma and interstitial lung disease providing specialist care to these patients. Our department offers a comprehensive range of respiratory physiology investigations, from routine spirometry to more complex respiratory assessments. Trainees benefit from working in a multidisciplinary team, enhancing their skills and knowledge across various respiratory diseases.

We encourage curiosity and continuous learning, helping trainees develop a deeper understanding of respiratory conditions and their management.

As a Trust we do not provide sleep diagnostics or therapeutics, however we have a strong partnership with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust who support us to deliver the sleep aspects of the training. Our department has extensive experience in supporting trainees entering the field of Healthcare Science, ensuring a well-rounded and robust training experience.

Trainees will be based primarily in the Respiratory Service located in the Churchill Hospital of Oxford city. During your first year you will work across different sites in the Churchill and John Radcliffe Hospital. These are all within the ring road and can be easily accessed via walking, or a shuttle bus that leaves regularly between the sites.

There is suitable hospital accommodation, called the Chartwell Flats, just across the road from where we are based, this is run by A2Dominion and getting in touch early to obtain a space is recommended.

All training objectives are achievable across both these sites. Occasionally placements outside of OUH can be sought to broaden your experience, these are always fully supported.

As part of your STP training at UHB you will be hosted at either Good Hope Hospital or Heartlands Hospital. You will have the opportunity to develop a diverse range of practical skills across several areas of discipline within Respiratory and Sleep Science.

These include:

  • Lung Function Testing
  • Sleep Diagnostics and Therapeutics
  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing
  • Oxygen Therapy
  • Non-Invasive Ventilation

Placement flexibility
While regular travel between different UHB sites is not required, there may be periods where short term placements at other UHB centres is necessary to meet your training requirements and offer a wider breadth of training. There is a dedicated staff shuttle bus between sites to help facilitate this.

Respiratory Physiology of UHNM NHS Trust has been supporting STP trainee’s since the inception of the programme and is well placed to offer training in the full range of respiratory and sleep investigations a student would be expected to cover as part of their course. Additionally, we have fostered strong bonds with other departments to facilitate easy organisation of rotational modules. UHNM is a large teaching hospital with access to a vast, on-site library and digital access to the latest research papers. Respiratory and sleep departments are involved in cross site working (between Royal Stoke and County). The successful candidate will be expected to attend both sites on a monthly rota which is flexible to allow the inclusion of annual leave and study commitments. There is also a regular shuttle bus which runs between both sites to facilitate an easy commute.

We are a busy department offering services in basic and advanced lung function, exercise testing, NIV, sleep disordered breathing and CBTi. Despite being based in a small county hospital we provide a wide range of advanced testing that allows for exposure to different conditions. We are very experienced in teaching and supporting trainees through various levels of qualifications. We are always looking to improve and develop new services so there is the chance to be involved in improvement projects. As a team we are also involved with the ARTP at a national level. The sleep service is based at the community centre (within Hereford city centre, 5 minute drive from the hospital) so the trainee will be required to travel between sites. Herefordshire is a beautiful county with natural assets and something for everyone to enjoy.
