Vascular Science – Barts Health NHS Trust

At Barts Health Vascular Lab, you will be working across 2 hospital sites with modern Vascular Lab facilities, Royal London Hospital in East London and St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the City. You may occasionally need to travel between the sites in the same day (there are good transport links including the new Elizabeth line).

We are a team of 7 part time Vascular Scientists and one full time administrator. We take one Vascular Science STP trainee at any one time, to allow sufficient training time. Although the STP has one dedicated supervisor, the whole team are involved with the training. There will be opportunities for training at other London Hospitals. The DVT component of the course is usually performed at another Trust, as DVT scans are not performed by the Vascular Lab at our Trust. Aside from DVT scanning, we perform an extensive range of advanced Vascular duplex scans, including fistula, renal artery, TCD and microvascular examinations.

The trainee will be based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. The site is part of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and has a gym, swimming pool, and childcare facilities. We are one of the largest Vascular Units in the country and one of only three Vascular Laboratories with IQIPS accreditation. The Vascular Studies Unit has seven qualified Clinical Vascular Scientists, two current STP trainees and a non-STP trainee. We have a new fleet of ultrasound machines and we are large contributors to teaching and research trials.

The Ultrasonic Angiology Department provides specialist clinical, scientific and technical services to the Trust and external organisations. The non-invasive vascular diagnostic services it provides are integral to clinical decision-making in a number of key areas including vascular surgery, renal medicine, cardiology, paediatrics and stroke medicine. Additionally the department undertakes research and development work, setting up and
managing externally funded projects. The post-holder will be based at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals. Travel between sites is available by staff shuttle bus.

The trainee will split their time equally between St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington and Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith, with occasional days at Hammersmith Hospital in Acton (usually not more than once a fortnight here). There are shuttle buses that link the hospitals, but these do not run during commuting hours and are used when a change of site is needed within the working day. St Mary’s and Charing Cross have excellent transport links with trains, tubes and buses. At Imperial we perform the full range of vascular scans, including DVT, carotid, AAA, lower limb arterial and lower limb venous and all rotations are carried out at our Trust as well.

The Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead is the major acute centre for the North Central London Vascular Network, and STPs would predominantly based at the Hampstead site. We also offer services at a number of other sites in the sector, most notably Barnet Hospital where we run a five day per week service. STPs would typically spend 1-2 days per week at a peripheral unit. In addition to the core activity common to all vascular services, trainees will benefit from our involvement in specialised areas such as microvascular diagnostics, renal transplant and dialysis access, and a tertiary vascular malformation service.
