UCLH is situated in the heart of London and is one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK providing acute and specialist services across five main hospital sites. The Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering is an essential part of UCLH delivering expert physical science support services across UCLH and to a number of external customers. The team is formed of approximately 70 Clinical Scientists, Clinical Technologists and administration staff.

Clinical engineering STP trainees will be based at the main University College Hospital site on Euston Road in London. We have strong links with services across UCLH and other NHS Trusts in London, so placements are offered specifically in the first year covering the broad spectrum of Physiological Measurement specialisms, Medical Physics and Clinical Scientific Computing as well as Rehabilitation and Clinical Engineering. Trainees will go on to work alongside other Clinical Scientists and Technologists specialising in device risk management and governance and physiological measurement in their second and third years to understand the variability of the role of clinical engineers and develop the work-based skills required for the profession.

UCLH provides excellent training opportunities, with the trainee based in the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) in Queen Square. Paediatric training is between Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College Hospital (UCH) which are in the same building complex and in walking distance, respectively. Community-based care experience is within London and the Cardiac Science rotation is hosted by Barts Health NHS Trust London – both accessible by train from NHNN. All other non-neurophysiology training activities will be between NHNN and UCH sites. We have close links with the Institute of Neurology for educational and research opportunities. The Department encourages active participation at internal and external scientific meetings and supports this activity through departmental bursaries.
