Clinical Bioinformatics Genomics – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

The Wessex Genomics Laboratory Service (WGLS) is a new integrated genomics testing service managed by University Hospital Southampton and formed from the amalgamation of Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory, now WGLS (Salisbury), and Molecular pathology, now WGLS (Southampton).

This training post will be primarily based at the Salisbury site but will require travel to Southampton for some rotation modules.

The laboratory has strong links with University of Southampton genomics research groups and access to high-performance computing and high-throughput sequencing technologies.

Clinical Scientific Computing – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

Based in Imaging Physics at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) NHS Foundation Trust, our team design, develop, deploy and support imaging-based decision support software in addition to a variety of other bespoke clinical applications. We have a program of increasing automation and AI in our clinical software to safely improve clinical outcomes and drive efficiency improvements. We take significant roles in research projects, using our expertise to collect, curate and analyse healthcare data. We have built and operate under our BSI-certified ISO13485 Quality System for Medical Device Software Development, which is being gradually rolled out more widely across UHS in collaboration with our Digital Department. The demand for our expertise is ever-increasing, as the organisation works to achieve a digitally-enabled NHS, with ready access to decision support and AI, where comprehensive, secure and linked data support the provision of high-quality care. Gastrointestinal Physiology – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

STP training in GI Physiology at University Hospital Southampton is based in the GI Physiology Unit on the main hospital site, Southampton General Hospital. You will receive training within the unit on a full range of diagnostic tests including high resolution oesophageal manometry with impedance, pH/impedance monitoring, wireless pH monitoring, high resolution anorectal manometry, endoanal ultrasound and hydrogen breath testing for both adults and paediatrics. There is no regular expectation to travel to any other sites but we have good links with other GI physiology units in the region and you will be encouraged to visit other departments on occasion to gain experience of how GI Physiology departments are set up and run in other hospitals.

We are an established unit attracting referrals from a large area and with good MDT links with both gastroenterology and colorectal surgery. Clinical scientists regularly attend pelvic floor, upper GI physiology and paediatric GI physiology MDT meetings. In the unit, we work alongside a team of physiotherapists and nurses who provide a conservative therapy, physiotherapy and biofeedback for patients with a range of bowel and pelvic floor conditions. There is excellent hospital-wide support for healthcare science trainees with a designated lead for healthcare science linking trainees and training departments together to support with training and training themes common to all disciplines.

Genomic Counselling – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

The Wessex Clinical Genetics Service (WCGS) serves a population of over 3 million patients across the region. The WCGS department is located at the Princess Anne Hospital, Southampton, which is the base hospital for STP trainees in Genomic Counselling. Clinical Genetics clinics take place across University Hospital Southampton sites as well as peripheral clinics at other hospitals in Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset. STP trainees are expected to arrange their own travel to and from clinics, and rotational elements of training that may take place away from the base hospital.

Local promotion details for post(s): We participate in the University Hospital Southampton STP open day every year, to encourage potential applicants to find out more about Genomic Counselling training and meet current trainees and registered Genetic Counsellors working in the department. The open day is usually held in December each year.
