University Hospitals of Leicester is a large tertiary centre, performing a full range of invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures with a strong culture of research and innovation. Based across 3 sites in the centre of this vibrant, diverse city, as a trainee Healthcare Scientist you will be expected to work across all 3 sites.

Your training program will lead you to specialise in either Rhythm Management in our ground breaking innovative Invasive Cardiology service or Cardiac Imaging in either the Adult Echocardiography service (Nationally accredited with the British Society of Echocardiography at 3 levels) or the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre (EACVI).

Our team are highly experienced in training and development, having been accredited to the National School for Healthcare Science for more than 10 years. There are excellent cross site transport links including a free to staff shuttle bus, and hospital staff accommodation available at 2 of the sites.

Clinical Immunology – University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

The Immunology laboratory is based at the Leicester Royal infirmary and offers a comprehensive range of immunology assays for the diagnosis and management of autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, allergy, myeloma and also provides flow cytometric testing for haematological malignancies. The clinical immunology team are co-located and work closely with the laboratory team facilitating clinical experience for our STPs.

All of the training for the entire curriculum can be undertaken onsite. There are close working relationships with other onsite Blood Sciences Departments to facilitate first year core rotations. The laboratory participates in all relevant external quality assurance schemes (e.g. NEQAS) and is and is fully accredited by UKAS.

Genomic Counselling – University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

The trainee will primarily be based at Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) and Northampton General Hospital (NGH), with LRI serving as the main training hub. To gain a diverse range of experience, trainee will attend clinics throughout the Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, and Rutland (LNR) region. The LNR Genomic Service will provide support, allowing trainees to develop expertise across various specialities, including cancer, cardiac conditions, neurogenetics, developmental disorders, and prenatal cases. Additionally, we offer a flexible hybrid working model, enabling some remote work.

Nuclear Medicine – University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

At University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL), Nuclear Medicine is based at both Leicester Royal Infirmary and Glenfield Hospital. Trainees would be based at Leicester Royal Infirmary but work at both sites. There is a shuttle bus free to staff linking the hospitals in the Trust.

At UHL, we have 4 gamma cameras, radiopharmacy and provide a molecular radiotherapy service. We have a team of 6 Clinical Scientists and 1 current STP so there is a strong support network for trainees in the department.

Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology – University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

The post will be within the Leicester Radiation Safety Service (LRSS), mainly based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. LRSS covers Leicestershire as a whole and some travel may be required, however there is a hopper bus service between the main sites. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is a large teaching trust with a Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) focusing on lifestyle, respiratory, personalised cancer treatment and prevention and cardiovascular allowing plenty of opportunities for development.
