The main base for the training post at NHS East and South East London Pathology (Bart Health NHS Trust) will be at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, but during the 3 years you will visit our Barts, Newham, Whipps Cross, Homerton and Lewisham & Greenwich sites for clinical experience. The department is one of the largest in the UK, with specialist services including LC-MS/MS, HPLC, atomic absorption and proteins. We provide clinical and technical POCT support across the partnership trusts. We serve specialist clinical services across Barts Health, which has the largest cardiovascular centre in the UK, the second largest cancer centre in London, adult and paediatric endocrine, nutrition and ICU teams. The genetics rotation in year 1 and paediatrics in year 3 is hosted by Great Ormond Street Hospital. The trainee will join a team of 4 Consultants, 9 Clinical Scientists and 2 trainees.

The Pathology department has laboratories on the three acute hospital sites at Ashford, Canterbury and Margate. EKHUFT Pathology is part of the Kent and Medway Pathology Network, which is entering an exciting time with changing IT and laboratory technology.

As an STP trainee in EKHUFT Biochemistry you will be joining a team of 23 biomedical scientists, 7 qualified clinical scientists and 2 other STP trainees. The department is very experienced in clinical scientist training, having hosted a trainee almost every year for over 20 years. There are regular journal club meetings with the clinical scientists and chemical pathologists across the Network.

STP trainees are based at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford with opportunities to spend time at Canterbury, Margate and the other hospitals within the Network. There will also be work placements at London teaching hospitals. All travel will be funded for visits to other sites.
East Kent is a delightful place to live with a fantastic coastline, beautiful countryside and villages, the cathedral city of Canterbury and excellent transport links to London.

We provide comprehensive training within our organisation, North West London Pathology (NWLP), as we offer a wide range of specialist Clinical Biochemistry services. Trainees will spend the largest proportion of their training programme at Charing Cross Hospital, but some rotations and training are delivered across other hospital sites within NWLP. For their core rotations, trainees will spend up to two months at West Middlesex Hospital (Clinical Biochemistry) and up to two months at Hammersmith Hospital (Haematology).

The Oxford University Hospitals’ Department of Clinical Biochemistry serves the whole of Oxfordshire and receives samples from over 4,000 patients daily, and it also serves as a hub for maternal and neonatal screening for the county and beyond. The training post is primarily based within our purpose-built multidisciplinary laboratory, where biochemistry, haematology/transfusion and immunology rotations will be completed. We have a specialised laboratory for the regional antenatal/newborn screening programmes and utilise a wide range of analytical techniques including LCMS/MS. Black Country Pathology Services (BCPS) is a network of four NHS Trusts in the West Midlands, which hosts a large automated hub laboratory at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, and essential services laboratories at Midland Metropolitan Hospital Birmingham, Russells Hall Hospital Dudley, and Manor Hospital Walsall. Specialist Biochemistry services operate at Sandwell General Hospital in West Bromwich, and City Hospital in Birmingham, which provides services including trace elements, toxicology, pharmacogenetics, TPMT, biologic drugs, renal stones and vitamin analysis amongst others.

The successful STP trainees will be primarily based at New Cross Hospital, Sandwell General Hospital and Russells Hall Hospital during their training. The successful candidate will be expected to work primarily in the Clinical Biochemistry laboratories on the Heartlands and Queen Elizabeth hospital sites. There will also be opportunity to experience our smaller laboratories at Good Hope and Solihull hospitals. Our laboratories offer a wealth of opportunities for trainees. Our large main automated laboratories utilise Abbott Alinity platforms coupled with state-of-the-art pre analytical and track systems which offer an extensive range of tests. We have a strong specialist biochemistry service on both sites and use high tech equipment like tandem mass spectrometry, HPLC, high resolution accurate mass spectrometry, ICP-MS, GC-MS, FTIR and Real time PCR. UHB also has large immunology and toxicology sections on the Heartlands site and are part of a pathology network with the Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS laboratories.

We also have strong links with the clinical teams on both sites, in particular endocrinology, metabolic medicine, liver, gastroenterology, acute medicine and cardiology and work with these teams to develop current and new services to support diagnosis and monitoring of disease and ultimately help patients when they need it most.

We currently have 3 STP trainees in biochemistry at UHB and have a very successful history of training and retaining trainees in the profession. The biochemistry Clinical Scientist team currently consists of 3 Consultant Clinical Scientists, 4 Principal Clinical Scientists and 11.5 Senior Clinical Scientists. This team provides an excellent support network and a wealth of experience and knowledge to trainees training at UHB.

We are excited to host a trainee in our Clinical Biochemistry Department at University Hospitals Dorset. You will be joining a One Dorset Pathology (ODP) Clinical Biochemistry team comprising of one medical consultant, two consultant clinical scientists and two principal clinical scientists. Our expanding service means you’ll gain lots of experience in service development, clinical audits, quality management, attendance at ward rounds and multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings.

We work across two sites with a free staff shuttle bus between Bournemouth and Poole Hospitals. We have fabulous coastlines including the Jurassic Coast, as well as beautiful countryside and nature reserves. Training will mostly be based at Derriford Hospital, the main site of University Hospitals Plymouth. The biochemistry department consists of an automation laboratory, a special investigations laboratory (including mass spectrometry, inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography) and a point of care testing section. If required, staff accommodation is available, which is a 10 minute walk from the hospital.

Additional training locations: in first year there will be a requirement to travel to Exeter several times over 4-6 weeks during a rotational module, along with a short placement (~2 weeks) in North Bristol during final year. There may also be opportunities for additional short, ad-hoc placements at other UK laboratories during training.
