We are excited to be able to offer a position for a STP trainee to join our Clinical Microbiology team at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. The post will be across both Microbiology hub lab sites at Frimley Park Hospital and Wexham Park Hospital, which are part of the Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) network. The successful applicant will benefit from the experience of a wide range of services on site, as well as spending time at other sites within the BSPS pathology network to gain expertise e.g. our Virology department is based at St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey.

We are a very friendly and welcoming team and the scope of our clinical and diagnostic services ensures that our STP trainees receive full support in developing their knowledge and expertise.

Clinical Microbiology – Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

You will be predominantly based at Royal Preston Hospital. There will be opportunities to visit Chorley and South Ribble Hospital, as well as other centres in our pathology network (Blackpool, Blackburn, Lancaster/Morecombe Bay).

The friendly, experienced team offers infection services for our augmented secondary care hospitals, including major trauma and neurosurgery, as well as surrounding primary care centres. External visits can be arranged for haematology, cardiothoracics, specialist virology, and public health.

Clinical Microbiology – London Microbiology Consortium

Health services laboratories are part of the London Microbiology Consortium

Based at one of Europe’s largest pathology laboratories in central London, the Halo building is a flagship laboratory for Sonic Healthcare UK. We are a joint venture partnering with Royal Free and University College Hospital NHS Trusts. We provide pathology services for Whittington, Moorfield’s Eye and Royal National Orthopaedic hospitals as well as other clinical centres. We offer exposure to a wide range of clinical settings including solid organ transplant, haematology, respiratory, infectious diseases, sexual health and paediatrics.

Our laboratory includes:

  • An advanced Virology department offering a range of molecular diagnostic assay including Next Generation Sequencing.
  • Microbiology including AI, automation and molecular diagnostics.
  • HTD: the UK reference laboratory for parasitology.
  • An advanced regional Mycology unit.

The rotations will require travel between the laboratory, associated hospitals and clinical settings. We are part of the London Microbiology consortium and work with UCL, UKHSA, GOSH and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Clinical Microbiology – Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust

The Microbiology department is based on the Maidstone Hospital site. It houses a purpose built laboratory opened in 2007 with 2 CL3 suites. We have 3 medical microbiology consultants who will be responsible for delivering your training along with experienced Biomedical Scientists. Our overall laboratory staffing comprises 46 WTE. You will be expected to rotate to The Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. There is an inter site bus, with park and ride options for those who drive both FOC. Secondments to other sites within the emerging Kent and Medway Pathology Network will be an integral part of this training opportunity with some placements at tertiary sites in London.
