This post is based at the Royal Bolton Hospital site, with no requirement to travel between sites except for specialist rotations. Trainees will have access to the Library and Knowledge services, hosted in the University of Greater Manchester Medical School building within the hospital site. There is also a 24-hour study space in the hospital itself. Laboratory Medicine offers regular lunchtime seminars and additional seminars and educational events are also offered by the wider Greater Manchester Diagnostics network

Haematology and Transfusion Science – Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The Eastern Pathology Alliance is formed from three Pathology Laboratories based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), the James Paget University Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn. The Laboratory at NNUH provides a large range of Blood Sciences services comprising Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion, Immunology and Toxicology.

We have an exciting opportunity to provide support for an STP trainee in haematology and transfusion covering our network. This role is key to the development of an established role in haematology and transfusion for a clinical scientist. The training will provide a comprehensive overview of laboratory haematology and transfusion practise to build a foundation required to develop a clinical laboratory role to support many of the critical functions of laboratories traditionally covered by consultant haematologists. These include providing advice and clinical guidance to other clinicians regarding haematology and transfusion practises and, essential elements of quality management.

Haematology and Transfusion Science – North Bristol NHS Trust

An STP trainee joining the Haematology and Transfusion Science department at North Bristol NHS Trust, will be based at Southmead Hospital and be able to complete all elements of their rotational and specialist modules in Bristol. The trainee will benefit from additional rotations during their specialist modules at a neighbouring hospital and the local NHS Blood and Transplant. Trainees are supported by both Clinical and Scientific staff with expertise in general and malignant haematology, haemoglobinopathies, flow cytometry, morphology, blood transfusion and haemostasis and thrombosis.

Haematology and Transfusion Science – The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust

The Black Country Pathology Services network consists of a hub based at Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. The spoke sites are Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital Trust, Walsall Healthcare Trust and The Dudley Group Foundation Trust however the trainee will not undertake any training at the spoke sites.

The STP trainee will be based at, and have the majority of their training at the hub unless it is an area that cannot be provided in-house. For these, rotations/secondments will be arranged with reference laboratories/specialised testing laboratories and will generally be outside of the network.

The Haematology department provides comprehensive laboratory services for routine and specialised Haematology testing of blood and body fluids using state of the art equipment and are UKAS approved. The department performs testing for routine coagulation and specialised haemostasis and thrombosis testing. The department has a substantive haemoglobinopathy section, screening for the presence of variant Haemoglobins and thalassaemia.
