This training post is based within the Transplant Immunology Laboratory, which has recently relocated to the Centre for Laboratory Medicine (CfLM), a purpose built new facility, located at St. James’s University Hospital, Leeds. The hospital site is approximately 1.5 miles from the city centre. The laboratory is co-located with other pathology specialisms including some of those required for the first year rotations.

The laboratory performs testing for renal and stem cell transplantation and immunogenetic testing for susceptibility genes to aid disease diagnosis and drug hypersensitivity. Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics – University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust

The Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) service is part of Derriford Combined Laboratory, and this speciality receives 4,000 patient requests annually, performing 6,400 tests in support of renal transplantation and also the diagnosis of HLA diseases and susceptibility to drug hypersensitivity reactions. GP requests represent 20% of the workload.

The H&I service provides a routine service from 9.00am to 5.30pm Mondays to Fridays. An on-call service is available at other times in support of renal transplantation and deceased donor HLA characterisation for national allocation of organs. The trainee will be provided with an opportunity to contribute to all aspects of the routine practical work of the H&I laboratory while also gaining valuable wider experience in the provision of H&I services beyond the existing scope of the Plymouth H&I service. There will also be the opportunity to participate in the on-call laboratory work service in the later stages of training.
