The London North Medical Physics Training Consortium is made up of six leading NHS Trusts:

  • Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Barts Health NHS Trust
  • UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Royal Free Hampstead NHS Foundation Trust
  • North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust
  • Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (Queen’s Hospital Romford)

To enable trainees to fully benefit from the diversity of training opportunities provided by the London North Consortium, during the course of a trainee’s three year contract, the trainee will spend time in any number of the member departments, and are therefore advised to take this into account when considering choices of accommodation.

The final allocation of medical physics specialism is made by the end of the rotational placements and is based on three criteria; training capacity, trainee choice and workforce requirements.

Medical Physics at the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, provides a well-rounded experience in Radiotherapy Physics, Nuclear Medicine Physics, Radiation Safety, Diagnostic Imaging, and Imaging with Non-Ionising Radiation.

Based at Maidstone Hospital, you may be asked to work at our other locations (Tunbridge Wells and Canterbury) for limited periods, and to undertake training opportunities within other healthcare organisations across London and the Southeast. Our hospitals have good public transport links.

We offer Medical Physics undefined because we believe the selection of specialism is important to you as well as us.
We endeavour to accommodate individual training preferences where possible, but you may be required to accept an alternative specialism if your choice is unavailable because of local training capacity and workforce need for example. Specialisms may therefore be subject to an internal selection process.

The Northern Training Consortium (NTC) is a well-established training consortium of 8 Trusts in the North East and North Cumbria, working together to deliver high quality training in the Physical Sciences. We currently have 32 STP trainees in the region, an experienced workplace training team including a dedicated training co-ordinator and a practice educator, and a trainee network providing peer support. The NTC has a strong record of keeping STP trainees in the region once qualified.

These Medical Physics Undefined posts will include rotations in Newcastle upon Tyne and elsewhere in the NTC region (e.g. Carlisle, Durham, Gateshead, Middlesbrough, and Sunderland) in year 1. Location will be fixed for the specialism years. The NTC offers training in all 4 Medical Physics specialisms, but the number of places in each specialism and their location may be limited by capacity in any given year.

The Royal Surrey Foundation Trust Medical Physics team has a long history of supporting training and has a number of trainees each year in Medical Physics and Scientific Computing. You will therefore be supported by an experienced training team and have peer support from over 10 trainees in Medical Physics. You will primarily be based at RSFT Trust in Guildford but travel may be required with registered staff to our satellite centres or other sites where we provide Medical Physics expertise. We are able to support specialisms in Radiotherapy Physics, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology. Specialism allocation is ideally done by trainee preference however in the event of a section being unable to support the number of trainees requesting to specialise in their area this will be done by competitive interview. You will also be supported to develop professional and leadership skills, engaging with trust and regional trainee networks.

This Medical Physics Undefined STP training post offers an excellent opportunity to develop a broad foundation in clinical medical physics within a supportive and well-established department. Trainees will be primarily based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, a major teaching hospital in the heart of the city. Some rotations will take place at the nearby Northern General Hospital; a regular shuttle bus service operates between the two sites. Additional travel to other NHS trusts across South Yorkshire may be required for routine QA facilitated by experienced members of staff.

Sheffield is a vibrant, student-friendly city known for its strong healthcare, engineering and research sectors. It offers an excellent quality of life, combining cultural attractions, affordable living and easy access to the Peak District National Park, making it an ideal location for both professional development and work–life balance.

We are able to offer all specialisms following the first year.

Local promotion details for post(s): We offer week long shadowing opportunities for potential STP trainees. We can only offer 2 spaces and so this will be first come, first served. We are also open to shorter day-long shadowing/departmental visits. If interested contact Alex Goodall (alexgoodall@nhs.net) or Tim Birtwistle (timothy.birtwhistle@nhs.net).

The trainee will be based at the Royal Stoke University Hospital for the duration of their training. The trainee will rotate through each of the medical physics modalities in their first year before specialising in either:

  • Imaging with Non-Ionising Radiation
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology

A specialism will be chosen at the end of the year 1 rotations and will be based on trainee choice and training capacity.

The small size of the department means that trainees are well integrated with the team and gain good exposure to the day-to-day activities of a medical physicist. Senior trainees provide excellent peer support for year 1 trainees through regular trainee meetings and are always happy to offer advice on matters such as training activities and university accommodation.
