The trainee will be part of the London Consortium (with St George’s University Hospital Foundation Trust, Tooting) and will primarily be based at Guy’s Hospital, with occasional attendance at St Thomas’ Hospital. A shuttle bus service operates between these two sites.

We provide facial and body prostheses for patients following trauma, congenital malformations and surgery. The Maxillofacial Prosthetics Unit at Guy’s Hospital is a regional centre covering South East London, Kent, and surrounding areas.

We work closely with multidisciplinary teams and provide services to:

  • Head and Neck Cancer – facial prosthetics (nasal, orbital, auricular), 3D surgical planning
  • Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) – nasal splints, keloid splints, sleep apnoea appliances
  • Plastic Surgery – breast and nipple prostheses, finger prostheses, custom-made silicone implants
  • Ophthalmology – ocular and orbital prostheses
  • Dental Orthodontics – orthognathic model surgery planning, including 3D surgical planning
  • Respiratory Medicine – customised tracheal tubes
  • Cleft Services – orthognathic model surgery planning, including 3D surgical planning
  • Speech and Language Therapy – customised tracheal tubes

Reconstructive Science – North Bristol NHS Trust

As a consortium, the South West hospitals in Gloucester, Bristol, Exeter and Poole provide joint training for the STP Reconstructive Science students. All South West Consoritum students will attend all units over 3 years; this starts with 6-week placements in first year, then increases to 2-3 monthly rotational placements in 2nd and 3rd year, according to a timetable.

In this instance, Bristol will be your allocated ‘Host Unit’, from which you will receive your fixed term contract, salary and educational training support expenses. The other units will provide you with an honorary contract for you to work in each hospital.

Reconstructive Science – Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Our Reconstructive science trainees are based at The Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead; a nationally recognised centre specialising in reconstructive surgery. East Grinstead is located on the edge of Ashdown Forest, an area of outstanding natural beauty. QVH has on-site parking with bus routes and rail links, to London and across the South East, via East Grinstead station. On-site accommodation may also be available.

The Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Service at QVH is open 08:30-17:00HRS Monday to Friday, delivering specialist care across oral & maxillofacial surgery, burns, plastics, ophthalmology, neurosurgery and ENT. Our department also supports, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, and facilitates close multidisciplinary working across all head & neck specialties. To provide a comprehensive range of training activities, additional placements are undertaken at King’s College, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London. There is also opportunity to visit external clinical-partners that manage our somato prosthetic services.

Reconstructive Science – Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust

Trainees will be employed through the Royal Cornwall Hospital (RCH) NHS Trust in Truro but will be required to spend time at other units, preferably in the Southwest. This will allow a full curriculum approach as the successful candidate will take placements working in other hospitals involved in the Southwest, to ensure all areas of the curriculum are covered. Accommodation may be available on site. The trainee will have opportunities to be involved in the diverse clinics available at RCH including associated departments. Learning and developing technical skills for planning and manufacturing a wide range of Maxillofacial devices.

The trainee will be part of the London Consortium (with Guy’s Hospital) and will primarily be based at St Georges Hospital throughout the placement. St Georges is a major centre for Trauma and Cancer care and part of the gesh group with Epsom and St Helier Hospitals. Travel to these sites may be required over the 3 year training.

The Maxillofacial prosthetic team works closely with other departments and MDT Teams to provide a range of facial/body prostheses and dental devices:

  • Facial prosthetics (Nasal, Auricular, Orbital)
  • 3D planning for Trauma and Oncology reconstruction
  • 3D planning for Orthognathic Surgery & Facial

The Reconstructive Science trainee will be based in the Head & Neck Unit: Maxillofacial Laboratory, at the Royal Derby Hospital as the host Unit, also in rotation with the Maxillofacial Laboratory at the Chesterfield Royal Infirmary.

Other Specialist Units will be able to support any modules that are not covered within the region.

The Trainee will be able to access the Post graduate Library facilities within the Hospital Units.
