The trainee will be primarily based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, within the Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Diagnostics Service. The service delivers specialist investigations across inpatient, outpatient, and home-based pathways. The trainee may be required to travel between hospital sites within Cambridge and the wider region to support service delivery, with good transport links available.

The post offers broad exposure to paediatric respiratory and sleep diagnostics, including pulmonary function testing, cardio-respiratory polygraphy, polysomnography, CPAP and home mechanical ventilation pathways for children and young people. The trainee will have access to a well-established lung function and sleep laboratory, modern diagnostic equipment, and remote monitoring technologies.

As part of this role, the trainee will be based across Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust sites and will benefit from training opportunities at Slough Community Diagnostic Centre, King Edward VII Hospital (Windsor), and Frimley Park Hospital, ensuring broad and varied clinical exposure. Respiratory Physiology at Imperial operates over 4 sites (Charing Cross, Hammersmith, St Marys and the CDC at Willesden). All sites are within walking distance from the tube and are served by local bus routes. Trainees will need to be prepared to travel to any site as required to access their specialist competences. King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCH) is one of the UK’s largest and busiest teaching Trusts. We provide a range of local hospital and specialist services across different sites, from King’s College Hospital (KCH) sites at Denmark Hill and at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH).

The trainee will be based in the Chest Unit/Lung Function at KCH. The department has both respiratory and sleep services although some aspects of the sleep training will take place at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Trust. The majority of the rotations will take place within KCH.

The Chest Unit at KCH is an IQIPs accredited department and offers a range of routine diagnostic lung function in adults and paediatrics, as well as specialist tests. The sleep service provides diagnostic studies (with the exception of full polysomnography which will be provided by GSTT) and provision of CPAP and NIV. Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing will be provided by the cardiology team at KCH.

The Respiratory Physiology Department has services over 3 sites, Acute site new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, Birmingham Treatment Centre in City Health Campus 1 mile distance away and Sandwell Treatment Centre in the Sandwell Health Campus which is 4 miles from the acute site. Main department is Birmingham Treatment Centre however you will be expected to travel between sites. The trust operates a limited shuttle bus service between sites during working hours. The STP student will be expected to work 08:30 am to 16:30 pm (30 minutes break).

This is a busy physiologist-led service providing an extensive range of investigations, pulmonary function tests, including CPET. We are a HOSAR centre. UHNM is a large teaching hospital with access to a vast, on-site library and digital access to the latest research papers.
