Respiratory and Sleep Science – Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The trainee will be primarily based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, within the Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Diagnostics Service. The service delivers specialist investigations across inpatient, outpatient, and home-based pathways. The trainee may be required to travel between hospital sites within Cambridge and the wider region to support service delivery, with good transport links available.
The post offers broad exposure to paediatric respiratory and sleep diagnostics, including pulmonary function testing, cardio-respiratory polygraphy, polysomnography, CPAP and home mechanical ventilation pathways for children and young people. The trainee will have access to a well-established lung function and sleep laboratory, modern diagnostic equipment, and remote monitoring technologies.
Training will be delivered within a multidisciplinary team including clinical scientists, physiologists, nurses, and medical staff, providing a supportive environment to develop core scientific, clinical, and professional competencies.

Respiratory and Sleep Science – Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust
As part of this role, the trainee will be based across Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust sites and will benefit from training opportunities at Slough Community Diagnostic Centre, King Edward VII Hospital (Windsor), and Frimley Park Hospital, ensuring broad and varied clinical exposure. Rotations between sites support delivery of the full Respiratory and Sleep Science STP curriculum. Trust sites are well connected via road and public transport, with an inter-site shuttle service available, and limited on-site accommodation.
Training is delivered within a supportive regional STP consortium, providing access to specialist services and expert clinical supervision. Frimley Health offers a high-quality training environment with strong exposure to pulmonary function testing, sleep diagnostics, and CPAP and NIV services.
The trainee will have access to modern respiratory physiology laboratories, dedicated sleep facilities, clinical reporting systems, and excellent education and learning resources.

Respiratory and Sleep Science – Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The Respiratory and Sleep Physiology Department at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT) operates across three sites: Royal Hampshire County Hospital (Winchester), Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH), and the Community Diagnostic Centre located at Andover War Memorial Hospital (AWMH). The STP trainee will be required to work flexibly across all sites, with the majority of training delivered at Winchester and Basingstoke to ensure exposure to the full range of respiratory and sleep physiology investigations and first year rotations, ensuring a comprehensive training experience. Travel between sites will be expected as part of the role. Where possible, a larger proportion of shifts will be allocated at the site closest to the trainee’s home address to support work–life balance. The department offers a broad clinical caseload and access to specialist respiratory and sleep diagnostic facilities.

Respiratory and Sleep Science – Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
Respiratory Physiology at Imperial operates over 4 sites (Charing Cross, Hammersmith, St Marys and the CDC at Willesden). All sites are within walking distance from the tube and are served by local bus routes. Trainees will need to be prepared to travel to any site as required to access their specialist competences. There is a staff hopper bus service that runs between sites.
Although the post-holder will be employed within the adult respiratory physiology service, trainees with also spend some time in the paediatric sleep and respiratory service at St Marys to give a broader training experience. Trainees have access to professional development activities and opportunities to network through the trainee network at the Trust. Respiratory Physiology is proud to be one of several IQIPs accredited services within the Trust and the trainee will be expected to actively engage with and support quality improvement initiatives.

Respiratory and Sleep Science – Isle of Wight NHS Trust
The Isle of Wight offers a wide range of respiratory and sleep investigations including spirometry, gas transfer, body plethysmography, arterial blood gases, polysomnography, CPAP and non-invasive ventilation treatment and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). The Pulmonary function team also work closely with the Respiratory Consultant, Specialist Nurses and Rehabilitation team offering a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and attend a monthly MND clinic at the local hospice offering a one-stop clinic for patients.
The post requires the applicant to have an in-depth interest in scientific practice and its application to direct clinical care of patients in the clinical environment. You will develop the skills to work autonomously and demonstrate the ability to guide and leads others. The post requires the trainee to travel to the national academic site and other courses throughout your training.

Respiratory and Sleep Science – King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCH) is one of the UK’s largest and busiest teaching Trusts. We provide a range of local hospital and specialist services across different sites, from King’s College Hospital (KCH) sites at Denmark Hill and at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH).
The trainee will be based in the Chest Unit/Lung Function at KCH. The department has both respiratory and sleep services although some aspects of the sleep training will take place at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Trust. The majority of the rotations will take place within KCH.
The Chest Unit at KCH is an IQIPs accredited department and offers a range of routine diagnostic lung function in adults and paediatrics, as well as specialist tests. The sleep service provides diagnostic studies (with the exception of full polysomnography which will be provided by GSTT) and provision of CPAP and NIV. Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing will be provided by the cardiology team at KCH.

Respiratory and Sleep Science – Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust
These posts within the Northern Care Alliance will be based primarily at either at Salford Royal or Fairfield (Bury) Hospitals and will require potential cross-working at either site, with placements also at the Royal Oldham site to give a breadth of experience. The first year intensive care placement will be at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Staff from Salford are currently involved in the sleep specialist teaching through Manchester Metropolitan University and we have comprehensive respiratory and neurology sleep services including full PSG. Therefore, we are able to provide learning experience for the whole STP curriculum. While time will be split across departments, line management will sit within one department. The Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust Respiratory Physiology Department is a physiologist-led service providing an extensive range of lung function investigations including CPET. We are a HOSAR centre. Our Sleep and Ventilation Service provides domiciliary polygraphy, CPAP and Non-Invasive ventilation (NIV).
The Respiratory Physiology Department has services over 3 sites, Acute site new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, Birmingham Treatment Centre in City Health Campus 1 mile distance away and Sandwell Treatment Centre in the Sandwell Health Campus which is 4 miles from the acute site. Main department is Birmingham Treatment Centre however you will be expected to travel between sites. The trust operates a limited shuttle bus service between sites during working hours. The STP student will be expected to work 08:30 am to 16:30 pm (30 minutes break).
This is a busy physiologist-led service providing an extensive range of investigations, pulmonary function tests, including CPET. We are a HOSAR centre. Our Sleep and Ventilation Service provides domiciliary polygraphy, CPAP and Non-Invasive ventilation (NIV) . The services currently employs 20 staff including 14 qualified Respiratory Physiologists/Clinical Scientists.

The trainee will be primarily based within the Respiratory Physiology Service at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton, an acute hospital providing a broad range of secondary respiratory services. The trainee will also have planned access to the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Cannock Chase Hospital, offering experience of planned, outpatient-focused diagnostic pathways. The service is predominantly adult focused; however, there are plans to commence a Children and Young Person (CYP) spirometry service within the CDC during the training period.

Respiratory Physiology of University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) has been supporting STP trainee’s since the inception of the programme and is well placed to offer training in the full range of respiratory and sleep investigations a student would be expected to cover as part of their course. Additionally, we have fostered strong bonds with other departments to facilitate easy organisation of rotational modules. UHNM is a large teaching hospital with access to a vast, on-site library and digital access to the latest research papers. Respiratory and sleep departments are involved in cross site working (between Royal Stoke, County and CDC). The trainee will be expected to attend all three sites on a monthly rota which is flexible to allow the inclusion of annual leave and study commitments. There is also a regular shuttle bus which runs between sites to facilitate an easy commute.
