As an STP trainee in Cancer Genomics in Birmingham, you can expect a mix of on‑site and remote working across the three training phases.

Phase 1 includes both in‑person and remote activity. It also has a longer consolidation period than other specialisms, during which you may be asked to work from home. If you prefer to work on site, a desk can be arranged at any point. Two Phase 1 modules are delivered by partner trusts. These usually take place in Birmingham, but may occasionally be held elsewhere in the West Midlands depending on availability.

Phases 2 and 3 are mainly delivered on-site and in person in Birmingham with some elements delivered in our partner GLH laboratories.

As an STP trainee in Clinical Bioinformatics in Birmingham, you can expect a mix of on-site and remote working throughout all three training phases.

Phase 1 is delivered through a combination of in person and remote activity. In person elements often take place in longer blocks of a week or more. If you plan to commute, please be aware that you may be expected to attend on site for sustained periods. It is common to spend several weeks working entirely from home, followed by several weeks fully on site.

Phases 2 and 3 usually allow some flexibility for remote working depending on service needs and discussions with the Bioinformatics Training Officer. You should still be prepared to attend on site whenever required.

Trainees will be based at Birmingham Women’s Hospital but will attend clinics around the West Midlands area on a regular basis to gain a breadth of experience. Therefore, travel will be required (with expenses paid). We operate a flexible hybrid model of working that facilitates some working from home and flexible working. We are a large centre with an extensive range of specialist clinics with GC involvement, including joint PGT clinics.
