As a Clinical Biochemistry STP your training will be based in the Blood Sciences department of Severn Pathology in the Pathology Sciences building at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. We provide a wide range of specialist Clinical Biochemistry services and have multiple specialties in Severn Pathology and so rotations will be on site. Clinical Bioinformatics Genomics – North Bristol NHS Trust

Training will be based at Bristol Genetics Laboratory in the Pathology Sciences building at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. From Bristol Genetics Laboratory we can deliver training across all specialist modules and three of the four phase one rotations. The rotation in Genetic and Genomic Counselling is delivered by the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Trust in the centre of Bristol over 4 weeks. Bristol Genetics Laboratory and Exeter Genomics Laboratory form the South West Genomics Laboratory Hub and occasional attendance at Exeter Genomics Laboratory may be required. Some home working can be facilitated.

Clinical Immunology – North Bristol NHS Trust

The trainee will be based in the department of Immunology and Immunogenetics within Severn Pathology at Southmead Hospital (North Bristol NHS Trust). All first year STP rotations are available at Severn Pathology, including haematology, biochemistry and genetics. The trainee will have the opportunity to observe adult Immunology clinics at Southmead Hospital. The trainee will be expected to travel to external sites to meet requirements for training activities where necessary, including Bristol Royal Infirmary. Transport between sites is by public transport there is not a shuttle bus. Accommodation is not available at North Bristol NHS Trust.

Regarding site facilities there is a Trust library with multiple PC’s. There are staff restaurants and cafe’s across the hospital site, and the trust has an excellent wellbeing programme.

The trainee will be part of a blood sciences cohort of STP’s in haematology and biochemistry.

Haematology and Transfusion Science – North Bristol NHS Trust

An STP trainee joining the Haematology and Transfusion Science department at North Bristol NHS Trust, will be based at Southmead Hospital and be able to complete all elements of their rotational and specialist modules in Bristol. The trainee will benefit from additional rotations during their specialist modules at a neighbouring hospital and the local NHS Blood and Transplant. Trainees are supported by both Clinical and Scientific staff with expertise in general and malignant haematology, haemoglobinopathies, flow cytometry, morphology, blood transfusion and haemostasis and thrombosis.

Reconstructive Science – North Bristol NHS Trust

As a consortium, the South West hospitals in Gloucester, Bristol, Exeter and Poole provide joint training for the STP Reconstructive Science students. All South West Consoritum students will attend all units over 3 years; this starts with 6-week placements in first year, then increases to 2-3 monthly rotational placements in 2nd and 3rd year, according to a timetable.

In this instance, Bristol will be your allocated ‘Host Unit’, from which you will receive your fixed term contract, salary and educational training support expenses. The other units will provide you with an honorary contract for you to work in each hospital.

Urodynamic Science – North Bristol NHS Trust

Most of the training is completed at the Bristol Urological Institute, which is based at Southmead Hospital. The department runs high volumes of urodynamic procedures as well as treatment interventions such as Botox and Sacral Neuromodulation. There will also be the opportunity for trainees to engage in lower gastrointestinal physiology assessments and become part of a multidisciplinary, multispecialist team.
