The trainee will be based at the Royal Stoke University Hospital for the duration of their training. The trainee will rotate through each of the medical physics modalities in their first year before specialising in either:

  • Imaging with Non-Ionising Radiation
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology

A specialism will be chosen at the end of the year 1 rotations and will be based on trainee choice and training capacity.

The small size of the department means that trainees are well integrated with the team and gain good exposure to the day-to-day activities of a medical physicist. Senior trainees provide excellent peer support for year 1 trainees through regular trainee meetings and are always happy to offer advice on matters such as training activities and university accommodation.

The trainee will be based at the Royal Stoke University Hospital for the duration of their training. The trainee will rotate through each of the medical physics modalities in their first year before specialising in radiotherapy. They will gain experience of a wide range of radiotherapy equipment, including Truebeam and Halcyon linacs, a CT scanner, an orthovoltage unit and an HDR afterloader. During their specialism the trainee will be located in an open plan physics office with approximately 10 other radiotherapy physicists. This will provide them with the opportunity to integrate with the rest of the team and to gain exposure to the day-to-day activities of a radiotherapy physicist. The small nature of the department will provide the trainee with the opportunity to get involved in a wide variety of development and project work.

Respiratory Physiology of University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) has been supporting STP trainee’s since the inception of the programme and is well placed to offer training in the full range of respiratory and sleep investigations a student would be expected to cover as part of their course. Additionally, we have fostered strong bonds with other departments to facilitate easy organisation of rotational modules. UHNM is a large teaching hospital with access to a vast, on-site library and digital access to the latest research papers. Respiratory and sleep departments are involved in cross site working (between Royal Stoke, County and CDC). The trainee will be expected to attend all three sites on a monthly rota which is flexible to allow the inclusion of annual leave and study commitments. There is also a regular shuttle bus which runs between sites to facilitate an easy commute.

Local promotion details for post(s): Interested applicants can contact the department for a site visit.
