Training will mostly be based at Derriford Hospital, the main site of University Hospitals Plymouth. The biochemistry department consists of an automation laboratory, a special investigations laboratory (including mass spectrometry, inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography) and a point of care testing section. If required, staff accommodation is available, which is a 10 minute walk from the hospital.

Additional training locations: in first year there will be a requirement to travel to Exeter several times over 4-6 weeks during a rotational module, along with a short placement (~2 weeks) in North Bristol during final year. There may also be opportunities for additional short, ad-hoc placements at other UK laboratories during training.

The Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) service is part of Derriford Combined Laboratory, and this speciality receives 4,000 patient requests annually, performing 6,400 tests in support of renal transplantation and also the diagnosis of HLA diseases and susceptibility to drug hypersensitivity reactions. GP requests represent 20% of the workload.

The H&I service provides a routine service from 9.00am to 5.30pm Mondays to Fridays. An on-call service is available at other times in support of renal transplantation and deceased donor HLA characterisation for national allocation of organs. The trainee will be provided with an opportunity to contribute to all aspects of the routine practical work of the H&I laboratory while also gaining valuable wider experience in the provision of H&I services beyond the existing scope of the Plymouth H&I service. There will also be the opportunity to participate in the on-call laboratory work service in the later stages of training.
