Message from your Training Programme Directors

Dr Lisa Ayers and Dr Owen Driskell

Your message this month is from Dr Owen Driskell.

The vigilant amongst you may spot or have spotted a difference or two at the School. Those of you who thought you were funded by NHS England previously were just ahead of your time! Health Education England has merged with NHS England. This means that NHS England has assumed responsibility for all activities previously undertaken by Health Education England. We have done all we can to minimise the change for you, whilst we learn what the future will look like. The services we provide will remain the same and, for the time being, there will be no changes in the ways that you contact us but keep an eye on that. We will let you know when this will eventually change. After all, our email address still reference an organisation that no longer exists.

These sorts of subtle changes in the landscape and infrastructure of the NHS system are what a consultant-level scientist would be expected to have an appreciation of. Where are the changes happening? Why are they happening? Where is the balance of influence moving to? Where are the levers of change? All things that those leading and developing scientific services and seeking support for them in the NHS will need to know. To get the best out of change you have to understand it better. You also must spot it coming. Be vigilant. As JFK said: “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.”

Opportunity to support HSST Induction Day 2023

We are looking for trainee volunteers to represent the HSST during our induction day. The event will take place on Wednesday 11th October in central Manchester.

The roles are:

Host

We are looking for a couple of trainees to take on the role of host during the day. Hosts will be responsible for introducing the sessions and the guest speakers.

Panel chair

During the day we are planning several panel sessions with guest speakers. We are looking for panel chairs to field questions from the audience and keep the sessions progressing.

Panel member

We are hosting a session with a panel of trainees. We are looking for panel members to provide advice to new trainees and answer questions from the audience.

This is a fantastic opportunity for trainees to develop their public speaking skills and support the new intake starting in October. Lunch and refreshments will be provided and your travel expenses will be covered by the School.

If you would like to volunteer for a role at induction this year please email us at nshcs.events@hee.nhs.uk with the role title you’d like to volunteer for and why you are well suited to the role.
