Have your say and shape the future of the NHS

We need the voices of trainees to shape the future of the NHS. The National Education and Training Survey is open until Tuesday 26 November, for students and trainees, and the NHS Staff Survey until Friday 29 November, for all staff.

Finally, Change NHS is building a 10-Year Health Plan, led by the government and the NHS. It features a dedicated section for NHS staff to help shape immediate actions and long-term changes.

Share your views and help us build a better NHS together.

Cellular Pathology and Genomics: Partnering for Precision Medicine – RCPath conference

Led by the Genomics and Reproductive Science Specialty Advisory Committee, the ‘Cellular Pathology and Genomics: Partnering for Precision Medicine’ conference aims to promote closer working between cellular pathology, genomics and industry in the delivery of patient-centred care. Using case study examples of best practice and problems faced in the laboratory today, the main aim of the sessions is to increase awareness and access to testing with a particular focus on delivery of precision medicines. The event will take place in person at The Royal College of Pathologists in London (E1 8QT) on Monday 25 November from 9.30am to 5pm (with optional networking drinks from 5 to 6.30pm).

New trial approach to progression monitoring

This year we will be trialling a new approach to progression monitoring based on current resources and feedback from HSSTs who have completed our previous approach to progression monitoring.

At this stage in the programme we would invite you to organise a training review meeting (between HSST trainee and workplace supervisor) to specifically discuss this year’s progression against previous targets. In the review meeting we would encourage you to discuss:

  • academic progression
  • workplace progression against the GSP domains in OneFile
  • professional qualifications (FRCPath, CEng, IAPS)
  • targets and timeline for HSST completion

This is also an opportunity to update your training plan and to consider your timelines in conjunction with your HSST end of funding date and your HSST completion deadline.

In a similar way to the process we have introduced for STP progression monitoring, we would encourage you to have this meeting recorded using the review meeting tool in OneFile. In OneFile the review meeting needs to be set up by the workplace supervisor. The notes that you record in the review meeting tool, using the headings above, can be used to monitor progress, inform support calls and support completion processes. Watch this short video on how to record a review meeting on OneFile.

This year we will not be issuing formal progression outcomes. Feedback has suggested that these outcomes do not always reflect a trainee’s or supervisor’s experience. Instead, we invite all trainees and supervisors to directly contact our HSST Training Programme Directors (Lisa Ayers lisa.ayers2@nhs.net and Owen Driskell o.driskell@nhs.net) if they wish to organise a support call about progression. We hope this change will better target our support services to those who most need them.

We will continue to review HSST progression monitoring going forward.

We would also wish to remind all trainees and supervisors that training support is available all year round and not just at progression points.
