Information for trainees and supervisors
Reminder to use the Turnitin checker for submission evidence
The NSHCS Servicedesk has recently received an influx of queries regarding the use of Turnitin within the e-portfolio. In particular, we have received queries about whether it is required, what types of evidence to use the checker on, and what to do if the checker is not used.
We would like to remind all HSST trainees and supervisors that:
- Trainees should be adding all evidence of activity (EOA) as uploaded files, and not within the freetext entry box.
- The Turnitin checker should be used on all pieces of EOA evidence, except for MSF summaries.
- Trainees should use the freetext area on the submission page to justify their Turnitin similarity scores, should that be necessary.
- If a trainee is submitting the same piece of evidence to their university and OneFile, it should ideally be submitted and run through their university’s Turnitin first.
- When a trainee has not used the Turnitin checker, the assessor or supervisor should return the submission back to the trainee, with the expectation the trainee will run the document through Turnitin.
Full guidance on using Turnitin can be found in our guidance for trainees, our guidance for assessors and training officers, and our Turnitin FAQs.

The Academy for Healthcare Science’s HCS Leadership Journal
Owen Driskell, the School’s Deputy Training Programme Director for the HSST, recently had the privilege of joining the editorial board for the Academy for Healthcare Science’s HCS Leadership Journal.
Recognising the importance of developing scientific leadership the Academy founded the Journal in 2021. It provides a publication where a broad spectrum of leadership perspectives can be shared from experienced to developing leaders. It has proven a successful journal with Higher Specialist Scientist Trainees regularly contributing articles about their contributions to the NHS and their leadership development journeys.
One of those successes is a current HSST, Usman Lula, who has taken on the role of co-editor for the Journal working alongside a diverse and dedicated editorial team. The Journal is published twice a year and is advertised in the AHCS Vox newsletter and HSST Monthly Memo.
