How to plan for training for the curriculum

Planning includes being prepared for the trainee before they start, recognising that they are supernumerary, and communicating this with appropriate colleagues in the department. As with all new employees you will need to plan an appropriate workplace induction for your trainee. Click the link below for guidance about what needs to be included in a training plan.

How to effectively plan for and implement work-based learning and assessment opportunities

This includes understanding not only your responsibilities but also those of your trainee. You will need to understand the different types of observed assessments Direct Observations of Practical Skills (DOPS) and Observed Communication Events (OCEs) as set out in section 2 of the work-based assessment standards.

You will also need to understand the purpose, implementation and assessment of Case-based Discussions (CBDs) as outlined in section 3 of the work-based assessment standards.

Further training on planning for learning and assessment can be found on the NHS Learning Hub.

What makes appropriate evidence for the achievement of training activities

For each of the different types of training activity the work-based assessment standards identify what the purpose of the evidence should be and what it should include.

  • 1.2.2 of the NSHCS work-based assessment standards explains how to generate evidence for training activities. Click on the link below for ‘Completing training activities’.
  • 1.3.2 of the NSHCS work-based assessment standards explains the purpose and evidence requirements of each of the training activity types. Click on the link below for ‘Types of training activities’.

Your trainee must be regularly submitting and documenting evidence in the e-portfolio to be assessed by you or other trainers and assessors in the department.

Further training on developing evidence to demonstrate achievement of training activities can be found on the NHS Learning Hub.
