The Scientist Training Programme (STP) in-service route is for existing NHS staff working in a recognised scientific specialty. Previously applicants have shared the same entry requirements as direct entry (those not currently working in the NHS) applicants. However, in-service applicants may now apply to the STP if they do not hold the relevant degree requirements but do have suitable experience and are unable to apply for equivalence. They must also be nominated by their department to be an in-service trainee.

If they meet that criteria individuals will be considered for entry onto the STP if:

  1. The proposed training centre is experienced, i.e., they have successfully trained at least one STP trainee.
  2. The proposed in-service STP trainee can demonstrate they are able to enrol on the designated MSc by passing the relevant university’s APEL entry requirements.

Further details about this new entry requirement for in-service applicants is available here.
