Please complete the new annual HSST research survey

We have extended the deadline to complete the HSST Research Impact Survey and would like to encourage you to complete it. We have recently sent you a reminder email with your personalised link to the survey. Completing the survey is a new process which will be repeated on an annual basis. The survey will only take 10 to 15 minutes of your time to complete. Here are a few reasons to do so:

  • A copy of your completed survey submission can be added to OneFile on an annual basis to evidence your professional and research development over the course of the HSST programme. This may be linked to several of the Standards of Proficiency.
  • Publishing your research titles, abstracts and outputs on our website will promote your work and may lead to collaborations with other HSSTs and centres.
  • The published research titles and abstracts provide a valuable resource for new and future HSSTs.
  • The data on HSST research impacts will be used to influence decisions on the ongoing training and development of Consultant Clinical Scientists as leaders in the NHS.

We recommend preparing for and submitting the Research Impact Survey in one sitting.  Before beginning please ensure you have to hand:

  • Your research title(s) and abstract(s)
  • Any available links to outputs from your research, eg publications, presentations etc.

If you would like to submit details of more than one piece of research, you can insert more than one title and more than one abstract in the title and abstract fields and then simply number them so that we can match titles to abstracts.

Please submit your Research Impact Survey by 31 October 2025.

HSST Annual Review of Progression 2025

The Annual Review of Progression for trainees on the HSST programme will open on Monday 3 November 2025 at 9am and close at 5pm on Monday 1 December 2025.

As part of the process, trainees and workplace supervisors are each required to complete a separate online form pertaining to the trainee’s progress, appropriate to trainee’s stage on programme.

The form will be in two parts:

Part 1 – confirmation of data held about the trainee in relation to completion timelines, interruptions, extensions or other adjustments and progress on the programme. This part must be completed by all trainees and their workplace supervisors.

Part 2  – Raising a concern – this section should only be completed if there are current or prior issues that have impacted on trainee’s ability to progress as planned over the last 12 months that you think the school should be aware of. Issues that can be or have been resolved locally and do not impact on any required elements of the programme (e-portfolio, academic programme or professional assessments) do not need to be reported.

Completion of part 1 of the form is a mandatory requirement for all active HSST trainees in all years 2 – 6 and their workplace supervisors. Failure to participate puts future funding, accreditation, and participation for trainee and/or department on the programme at risk.  The form has should only take between 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

We also recommend that as part of the review of progress, each trainee and their supervisor should complete a review of progress meeting on OneFile to capture their discussions and to agree an action plan for the next 12 months.

We intend the review to be a supportive and facilitative process so that we can assist with any barriers to progression and maximise your opportunity to be successful.

Those who are out of training due to exceptional circumstances or statutory leave will be reviewed at the next Annual Review of Progression once they return to training.

If you think you are unable to participate in Annual Review of Progression this year, please contact the school to confirm the reason for this by Monday 20 October 2025. england.nshcs@nhs.net

The role of Exercise Physiologists in the NHS – National survey

Exercise Physiologists are taking on an increasing role in clinical care, particularly in prehabilitation and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). Yet, pathways into these roles and opportunities for skill development remain highly variable. A new Level 7 qualification is being explored to provide structured training through academic study and hospital placements, within the area of CPET and Prehabilitation.

We are seeking views from Exercise Physiologists, Cardiac and Respiratory Physiologists and departments to understand workforce journeys, current skill sets, career progression and support needs. Your feedback will directly help shape the future of training and professional development. The closing date for the survey is 29 October 2025.
