STP training standards – trainee responsibilities

Taking on the trainer role is a significant responsibility and commitment. To support your trainer and departmental colleagues to navigate these responsibilities, we have developed a set of standards which clearly articulate what is expected of them. These are known as the NSHCS training standards and expectations.

Alongside your trainers’ responsibilities, you as the trainee have responsibilities, as you are an active participant in your own learning journey. Read about responsibilities for training.

These responsibilities can be found on the STP trainees section of the School website. This is a dedicated section containing key information and resources to help current STP trainees during their training. Please do take some time to familiarise yourself with this section and the information available to you.

Guidance resources for trainees on the NHS Learning Hub

For each of the 5 training standards, we have developed ‘quick guides’ for trainees on specific topics. These quick guides are available on the NHS Learning Hub which we encourage you to access.

We suggest that you access the ‘Developing evidence to demonstrate achievement of training activities’ and work through the ‘Reflective Practice in Healthcare Science’ modules. Both resources will support you in your rotations and beyond.

To access the NHS Learning Hub, you need to have an account with the service. Once you have access to the NHS Learning Hub you can access the National School of Healthcare Science catalogue. See below for details of how to sign up for the NHS Learning Hub.

If you have an NHS email
To access the NSHCS catalogue of resources, you will need to sign up for free to the NHS Learning Hub using your NHS email address. Click on this link and follow the instructions.

If you do not have an NHS email address
Complete this brief form to grant us permission to send your name and e-mail address to the NHS Learning Hub development team to request access. You must provide your professional, work email address.

Trainee networks

There are lots of trainee networks available for you to join during your training programme. The networks offer a chance to communicate with others during your training. They also run events that help complete elements of your training.

Most of the trainee networks were at the recent induction for you to have a conversation with. You can find their contact details on the School website.

London Healthcare Science Trainee Network Buddy Scheme

The London Healthcare Science Trainee Network have set up a Buddy Scheme via which new STP trainees can seek and gain support from a more experienced trainee or alumnus.

For 2nd and 3rd year trainees this is a great way to give back to the programme and support less-experienced trainees. It is also excellent for your CV for some Professional Foundations training activities.

Add the dates for the STP Final Year Assessment to your diary

The STP Final Year Assessment is an essential part of your programme. You will sit the final year assessment at the summer sitting in the final year of your programme. If you are ‘out of sync’ with the usual timelines for the programme, you will be informed which sitting you will need to attend.  We’ve released the dates for the summer and winter sitting of the STP Final Year Assessment until 2028. You need to be available for all of the working days within your assessment window. Make a note of the dates in your diary now to make sure you’re ready.

Register for the November Healthcare Science Education and Training Collaborative

Our next Healthcare Science Education and Training Collaborative will take place online on the afternoon of Tuesday 12 November 2024.

We are very excited that our new Head of School, Professor Delia Ripley, will be opening the online Collaborative in November.

At the Collaborative, we plan to provide an update on recruitment for STP, the year 1 progression review and the new final assessment.

We will be looking at the other healthcare science courses that the NSHCS have helped to develop, both from the perspective of the providers and from recent alumni. Come and see what else the School has to offer beyond the commissioned programmes of STP, ETP and HSST.

The Collaborative will close with a presentation from Vicky Chalker, Deputy Chief Scientific Officer, NHS England, who will be expanding on the presentation she gave at the face-to-face Collaborative in March about the future of healthcare science.
