4. Embed equality, diversity and inclusion into training

It is essential that your trainee is able to practise professionally and clinically in a way that upholds and enhances equality, diversity, and inclusion. It is also critical for the trainer to practice inclusivity, ensuring that your trainee can fully access all aspects of their training without prejudice or limitations.

What you need to know

In addition to your own workplace’s equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) policies, procedures and practices, you will need to role model the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency for Clinical Scientists and the HCPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics.  You will also need to acquire and develop the skills and knowledge about:

  • Opportunities in practice to embed and raise awareness of ED&I and the NHS values into the training experience. This will enable your trainee to better understand their own responsibilities in relation to ED&I and the ethical framework within which they will work (HCPC standards).
  • The principles of differentiated and adaptive training practice and how to practise them. This is about developing a view that recognises that differences are an asset and adapting the environment and practice to accommodate these differences. Further training on the principles of differentiated and adaptive training practice can be found on the NHS Learning Hub.
  • What your trainee’s needs are as a learner so that you can provide them with the best training experience. This will enable you to adapt training delivery and the training environment so your trainee can meet their full potential.
  • Your own biases and how to challenge them. Further training on conscious inclusion can be found on the NHS Learning Hub.
