Update

Some of the language used around the work-based assessments for the Scientist Training Programme has been updated since these webinars were recorded. Competencies are now called ‘training activities’ and OCEs are called ‘Observed Communication Events’. We have also published standards for carrying out work-based assessments.

Introduction to Assessment - part 1

This workshop focuses on building on your experience of assessment/assessing and will help you understand how and why assessment is used in the Scientist Training Programme (STP).

By the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • critically examine your own values, beliefs and attitudes in relation to assessment
  • define what is meant by the term ‘assessment’ including formative and summative assessment
  • examine the purposes of assessment
  • analyse the characteristics of a good assessment
  • evaluate the importance of feedback for formative and summative assessment

Introduction to Assessment - part 2

This workshop focuses on assessing written work, interviews and discussions.

By the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • confidently engage in assessing summative assessments e.g. IACC
  • write constructive feedback across all grade descriptors
  • use effective and probing questioning techniques to elicit evidence of learning

The workshop has a focus on the STP final assessment but the techniques can be applied to a wide range of assessment types.
