The sources of evidence are:
- An evaluation of progress submitted by the trainee.
- An evaluation of progress submitted by the Training Officer.
- Evidence on the e-portfolio of completion of work-based assessments and training activities associated with rotation modules.
- Progress on the academic programme (MSc).
- Evidence of a completed Multi-Source Feedback assessment via OneFile.
Outcome | Statement | Descriptor |
1 | Progress satisfactory | Review of progression evidence indicates that the trainee has met the progression requirements and demonstrates development of professional values and attributes of a Clinical Scientist as expected at this stage of their training. Trainee is in a good position to progress to year 3 of the programme.
Trainee and training department are commended for their efforts in actively engaging with the Scientist Training Programme. |
2 | Progress mostly satisfactory; attention to missing rotation training activities and/or work-based assessments required | Review of progression evidence indicates that the trainee has mostly met the progression requirements and demonstrates development of professional values and attributes as expected at this stage of their training. Minor concerns highlighted in the review are not deemed to be a barrier to progression to year 3 of the programme. It is noted that some training activities and work-based assessments associated with rotation modules are still to be signed off and/or some professional values and attributes require attention. It is recommended that the trainee and Training Officer revise the training plan to ensure timely completion of all training activities and work-based assessments associated with rotations prior to the start of year 3 and identify opportunities to further develop the professional values and attributes expected of a Clinical Scientist.
Trainee and training department are acknowledged for their efforts in actively engaging with the Scientist Training Programme. |
3 | Evidence shows that progress is not being made as expected | Review of progression evidence indicates that the trainee is not making progress as expected either on completing training activities or work-based assessments of their rotation modules or in the development of professional values and attributes or a combination of both. Trainee will be offered a support meeting for further investigation. An action plan for the trainee and/or training department will be agreed to facilitate progression on the programme. If trainees are deemed to not engage with the agreed actions, this could result in exit from the programme; if training departments are deemed to not engage with the agreed actions, this could result in suspension of training department accreditation. |
4 | Evaluation forms not received from either trainee or Training Officer or both or other evidence missing | The review could not be carried out as either the trainee or their Training Officer has not submitted their evaluation of progression form.
Failure of trainees or Training Officers to submit their evaluation form or other evidence of progression, without acceptable justification, constitutes a failure to engage with the review, putting the trainee’s continuation on programme and/or department accreditation at risk. Trainee or Training Officer will be referred to the Trainee Support Panel which will determine the next steps/actions required. |
5 | No evidence expected; review to be rescheduled | Trainee is known to be on informed leave from programme such as maternity/paternity, long term sickness, approved exceptional extenuating circumstances; trainee to inform the School of their return to programme to trigger a scheduling of progression review. |
6 | Trainee is not making progress for known reasons | Trainee and/or training department has previously been referred to the NSHCS Training Support Panel and the School is actively managing with trainee and/or training department. |
To ensure a fully informed outcome decision, we advise that:
- you contact your assessors to request sign-off of any specialist training activities and work-based assessments associated with rotation modules as soon as possible; referencing the midterm review of progression
- if you encounter any issues with sign-off, we recommend that you request help from your Training Officers and ask them to liaise with the nominated assessors
- you should ensure that 1 Multi-Source Feedback should have at least been instigated, if not completed, by the time of your Midterm Review of Progression
We would encourage you and your Training Officers to liaise with one another to ensure you have both received the Midterm Review of Progression notification email and have added the date to your calendar.
Should either you or Training Officer’s contact details change, please let the School know immediately so that the information held on the trainee’s record for communication is up to date. Technical issues will not be accepted as justification for non-participation.
We also recommend that you schedule a pre Midterm Review of Progression meeting with your Training Officer, to discuss progress and make sure you are ready to submit your individual evaluation forms.
A further meeting after your Midterm Review of Progression meeting would be useful, to discuss any outcomes or revisions that may be required to your training plan.
